8 3/4" gasket between housing and brakes???

I have a question regarding the 8 ¾” rear end. There is a foam gasket the goes in between the axle housing and the brake dust shield. Should I replace this or just used some RTV? The gasket is so cheesy that I cannot imagine that it would stop a leak but, I just want to see what others do with success.

I believe its called a axle flange housing gasket.

It obviously "used" to stop leaks, because the combination of the

inner seal

bearing cavity, packed with grease

gasket from housing to brake shield

gasket from brake shield to bearing retainer

outer bearing seal

formed a sealed cavity that retained the packed wheel bearing grease

Doesn't the foam gasket go between the backing plate and axle retainer plate. The gasket between the housing and backing plate is a steel shim style.

I'll give the steel ones a try. The foam ones work only once. They are pretty cheezy.

You need a steel one and a foam one on each end, just like 67dart's pic. Lots of suppliers have them, I got my foam one from DMT
