What I have is a custom length housing and axles supplied by somewhere in L.A. Axles are 30 spline Currie items fitted with green bearings. I set this diff up with a spooled 741 case and recently stripped the 3.55 ring and pinion.
What I've been doing today is fittng up a spare 489 case 3.55 suregrip I had lying around.
The problem I have is that the axles seem to be too long and bottom out on the thrust spacer in the middle of the diff centre which is what axle end float would normally be adjusted against in a diff with standard axle bearings. Obviously there is no such thrust spacer in the spool.
What's the best way to sort this out?
Do I remove the thrust spacer or must it be left in there? I assume I'll have to disassemble the centre to remove it?
Easiest way for me to solve it as I see it is to machine a couple of mm off the spline end of each axle (I do have my own lathe). Can anyone see any problems with this?
Or any other ideas or info most welcomed.
