I bought a 8 3/4 out of a Ply Bel III and the pig doesn't have any numbers on it. Should I assume it is a 741? Is measuring the pinion shaft the only way to tell? Thanks
Bruce

I have never seen one without numbers, hopefully the case is original to the car, what year ply.?

Look for a 7 digit cast in number on the side of the pumpkin at the bottom, drivers side and will end with either 657 or 741 or 742 or 489.

I have one in a bucket out at the shop with no numbers, but it's easy to tell that it's a 489 case. Don't just assume that it's a 741, include a pic here if you can and we'll see if we can get an ID on it!!! Geof

iv'e seen a couple of these, this one came factory in a 68 fury 383 car,it has 985 casted in the other side in small letters and 2.76 stamped in the bottom rt. side and date 10 17 67.i think 985 is the small pinion

That pic looks just like mine, the car was a 68 383 car, there are some numbers on the right side, really hard to read, I wire brushed the numbers but they almost disappeared when I did. Looks like they end in 7.

Could be a 657 which is a 741 later in life. Got a 657 in the Demon and it uses the same parts as a 741.

985 is the 742 later in life.

Post up some pictures.
Also based off the picture posted from Mikebee, that looks like a 489 (upside down)
