My restoration guy is asking me "what black" is used for the 8.75 rear end in 1966? I had always heard that black was, well, black for the most part, unlike white or any other color in autos. He said the shelby Mustang he is working on has 50% black for the rear housing. Does any of the make sense to you guys. What do I tell him. My Barracuda is a good restoration not a "perfect show car".

The 50% probably refers to the glossiness.

In the FSM there is a paint section (at least in 67) some of the black says 80% gloss.

Ask you painter what exactly he is referring to.

I just checked and I can't find the 80% reference. I know I read it somewhere!

I would agree with @Dana67Dart . Black used to be "just black" years ago, but its not anymore with the usage of metallics and pearls in a factory black color, even a standard black color will usually have a bit of other color in it as well, depending on the code of course. But considering he is using the word "percentage", that usually describes the amount of gloss level relevant to full gloss and is adjusted by adding a flattening agent to the single stage or clear.

Thanks for the clue-in. Did some digging on the web and looks like the housings were satin to semi gloss, or 30 - 40%. Lots of stuff I have taught myself, but the body and paint pros have lingo I am still figuring out.
