So this post may have been done but a search did not show up what I was looking for.
I installed the 273 back in my 66’ Barracuda and with the headers (Doug’s) I needed to reinstall the factory 90 adapter for the filter. It was original and had the 1-1/4” head and cast iron body. The bolt had the dreaded 4 holes in a row and upon fighting to spec... broke. I called Mancini and over nighties one and installed with their seal kit package.

No matter what I did I ended up with the head of the new bolt (1-1/8” )leaking oil on my new headers. 4 times off, I tried a new copper gasket that was twice the thickness and even thicker from inside diameter to outside diameter. Still leaking. So I went into my parts bin and found a factory aluminum set up from a swap meet years ago. I cleaned it up and with a new seal kit installed it and no leaks. What gives? Well it seems the bolts being manufactured now are an 1/8” longer than the originals. They actually are bottoming out before the head tightens to the adapter. Here is some pictures to help show what I mean.

Here is where it was leaking between the head of the bolt and the adapter.

She is clean so I want to keep it that way.

The aluminum adapter fixed the problem. Bolt was 1/8 shorter and the bottom of the head was just a schootch larger as well.

The kit I bought to fix the broken 1966’ factory bolt. The length on the new bolt was 3.00” and the head was 1-1/8” the original was 2-7/8” long with a 1-1/4” head. Sorry no pics. I was so pissed I threw the bolt in the woods. Lol! Temper temper.

Last picture shows how the new bolt was bottoming out last thread. Both bottom face and last thread was shiny from contact.

Hard to imagine that 1/8” can cause you problems but stranger thinks have happened. Easy to find out. Just shorten the new one to 2 7/8”.

I just switched over to the aluminum one with the correct length. Also the 66’ cast one the inner hole the bolt travel thru is larger as well. Maybe when I do a oil change on my 72 340 I will pull that one down and measure to see if it a bolt issue or casting issue. I believe the 340 one is aluminum as well.
