904 disassembly help needed

Hi all, I am pulling the 904 apart on my 69 Barracuda for a rebuild. When I pulled the input shaft, it did not separate from the output shaft, but it all slid out as one unit. Looking at the manual and everything I have found online, it looks like it should have just slid apart and the rear clutch assy. should have come with it (output shaft staying in the housing).

I have wiggled and pulled and can not get the input shaft to separate...am I overlooking something?

watching the 3rd video, right about 4 minutes in, when I tried to pull the input shaft and rear clutch out, it did not separate from the output shaft but it all came out at once. I am a bit chicken to just start prying on things....
Here is a pic of where I am at. I believe it needs to separate inside of where I put the red line.

Sounds like the bushing is probably scored or grooved up real bad because it should come right apart. I've had them stuck to where I had to use a little gentle persuasion. Your gonna have to get it apart somehow because apparently there's something got them jammed together.
 
Fishy, any ideas on how to persuade it? (I added a pic above) I have pulled on in as hard as I can (with out putting the output shaft in a vise and putting my feet up against it...) do I get something inside the driving shell and pry? that seems to flex the driving shell, I don't want to distort that.
 
Got it apart! Held the output shaft in my vise (copper plates on the jaws so, no damage to the shaft) and then grabbed the input shaft with a pair of vise-grips (small un-machined area, with a rag between that and the vise-grips) and then persuaded on the vise-grips with a hammer! Clutches in there are SHOT! no wonder it was not working properly! I think there is one friction plate with material on one side of it! All the others are worn to bare metal and look like they have gotten pretty hot!

Good deal! Sounds like the clutches were really welded together. Must have got real hot.

yeah, there is friction material on one side of one of the clutches, other than that, they are all bare steel with heat marks. No wonder it didn't run right!

Is that indicative of a faulty valve body possibly? Reason I ask is, I used the same valve body (has a shift kit in it) in a different tranny I put in there and it started shifting funny shortly after that as well. Sorry, I don't remember exactly what it was doing, it has been sitting for a year and a half or so.

Also, sometimes, when I put it into park, if I rev the engine a bit, it would try to creep forward..... very strange.... and both trannys did that.

If it wanted to creep in neutral or park it may have had a valve body issue. The trans may have also been fairly worn and the valve body issue finished it off. If you plan on reusing that valve body you need to take it all apart and clean and inspect everything good cause it's probably full of all kinds of burned friction plate trash. When you get it back together if it still wants to creep I'd diagnose/fix the valve body or replace it with a known good one.

Do you know what brand shift improver kit it had in it?
 
I don't know what was put into the valve body. I have another one that is stock that I will pull apart and clean out real well. I bought a TF-2 to put in it so at least I will know what is in it. I Along with the master rebuild kit, I also got a new rear band, and a spring and roller kit for the overrunning clutch. (One of the springs was broken.)

Starting from scratch is always a good plan
 
One more question, on the friction plates, I have a stack of 8, in one bag. 4 of one thickness and 4 of another. Do the 4 thicker ones go in the front clutch?
 
check your clearance with the steels and disc are dry......after getting the clutch pac clearance correct....soak them in tranny fluid for 20-30 minutes
 
yeah, mine is smoked so bad, one of the friction plates looks like a wave washer!
