You know the factory never made a 904 for a 340, right. And why. And what you have to do to make a 904 live behind a 340.
71 to 74 are all good candidates; even up to about 76. But the A998 is a better starting point IMO. The A998 has deeper drums for more clutches. But the 904 can be modded as well.
But not the A998 with the low gear in it. The ratios are too wide for performance, unless you run a really deep rear gear, like for drag-racing..
Except if you are only gonna run 1 gear to 55/60 mph, then it can be a great gear, with the right rear.
If your cam peaks at 5600say, and the power curve is good to 6200, then 3.23s might carry you to 54mph @6200with 5% TC slip. Normally 3.23s are scoffed at, but with the 2.74 low, this makes an 8.85 starter gear which is about same as 3.55s with a 2.45 low regular A904. And the 3.23s give you a better hiway cruise.
But be warned, a cam to peak at 5600 in a 340 is a pretty big cam. You will need to bring the Dcr up into line and probably still run a 3000ish TC
So, not knowing what TC you are wanting to re-use, this is all just so much speculation.
