Are there preferred years for 904's?? For instance, I believe the later lock-up versions had a lower first gear, but is there a comprehensive list of differences by year somewhere??

Yes. Anything 71 and later. They have the part throttle kick down valve assembly. Makes it very nice.

'71 and later 904 is more desirable as it has the larger 2nd gear servo and double wrap band.

Your 76-77 transmission will be perfectly fine and likely has steel planetaries.

Find one from behind a 74-77 360, it will be a 999, but no low gear sets until the 80's sometime.
