Apples are just as prone to viruses. There just aren't as many because 1. Not as many people use Macs as Windows PCs, and 2. Most of the computer virus writers are more familiar with the IBM platform and Microsoft Windows, which means its easier for them create a virus for that platform.

3rd party software, browsers, and plugins can still be prone to viruses. A Mac can also carry a virus, but not be infected. However, if that carrier Mac connects to a network or sends an infected email, you can infect any Windows PC on that network or that receive your email. So Macs aren't 100% foolproof.
