Picked up an A500 trans out of a 89 Dakota. Plan on building it and replacing the 904 currently in my 68 Dart. The existing combo includes a 5.9 Magnum from a Dakota, with Edelbrock heads and a mild cam (like 213/219 @.050). Currently connected through the upgraded stock 904, to a Ford 8.8 axle. I picked up a Holley trans tunnel brace to facilitate regaining some of the strength lost when the crossmember is cut.
I know that the earlier trans aren't as good as the later ones, but it's what I could find and the price was right. Current plans include:
1) Replacing clutches and seals. Plan on using Red Alto clutches and 2nd band. Any real reason to upgrade the reverse band? I figure I won't be romping on it going backwards... Also, I've heard I need to use thinner clutches in the Direct drum. Are the thinner clutches the ones used in the Forward clutch?
2) I think the overdrive unit is know to be week. The 5.9 Magnum came with a toasted 46re. I think I can use the overdrive unit out of it. Let me know if I'm wrong.
3) Shift kit. I've installed a few before, the SHIFT TF-TC, and the basic Trans-go shift improvement kit. Should I go for the TF2 kit for this build?
4) Some sort of mild stall converter. Haven't looked into it much yet. Needs to have a lock-up clutch, so I'm sure there will be less options that for a 904/727.
Anything else I need to upgrade? Any other parts from the 46re work on the a500?
Just a little dirty! As bad is it looks on the outside, the fluid was still red and no chunks of metal in the pan.
