I picked up an 81 904 to build for my 67 Dart. I like the improvements they made to the 904 in these years, and the one I picked up when checked on the serial number says heavy duty as well. I'm assuming just because of the 5 clutches and steel planetaries, but who knows.

My question is, should I just disable the lock up valve, or is it possible to get a converter with say a 25-2800 stall? If I disable the Lock Up valve, could I just use a non Lock Up converter?

I should also say, that I'm planning on building this as a manual shift if that makes any difference to the questions.

Thanks!

If you can find a lock up converter that has a higher stall speed, it’s like an extra gear. Not a REAL extra gear but when locked up, it will run cooler and transmit more power to the rear axle.

I used to dislike a lock up but once I got used to them…love them. I’ve stepped up to over drive trans now in my older stuff. Lower engine revs and better fuel mileage.

Lock up and non-lock up convertors have different spline counts on the input shaft, so no- you can't just use a non-lock up convertor on a lock up transmission.
As far as the convertor goes, the 318/360 lock up convertor stalls around 1700-2000 rpm (per FSM), the V6 converter stalls at 1800-2100 rpm (higher when used behind a V8). A good convertor builder should be able to tweek your stall speed where you want it, or build you a new convertor (not a common item, so you will need to CALL them and speak to someone directly about what you want).
Haven't had one built in a looong time, but Dynamic is a name that gets brought up pretty regularly.
