Well, wouldyalookit that, a cavity right by the accumulator, just as I remembered. I may be getting old but I ain't senile yet.
I just never seen a ball in there.

You want conspiracy theories? I got a few of those I like to share,lol

I have a 69FSM and that channel is shaped the same way but no ball in it.
That channel appears to go to the front servo apply circuit, which is the KD band. Book says front servo apply.
That circuit originates at the 1-2 shift valve.
That circuit is also used during band release, and it takes a quick detour thru the shuttle valve, and a detour into the accumulator.
Best I can figure is the ball reroutes some of the oil during the application of the KD band, to charge the accumulator,to soften the KD hit; I'm guessing.
