There is an odd object connected between the negative post and ground on the ignition coil on my 273 V8 1967 Barracuda. It looks like a capacitor/condenser but I can't find any reference to such an item in any parts catalogs or manuals. And the wire intended to connect it to the coil has broken off so finding a replacement is likely somewhat important. I first thought it was some version of a ballast resistor, but it surely looks like a condenser of the type inside the distributor. Any idea what it's for and where to get a replacement?

It is a noise suppressor. Look in the Accessory section of the FSM.

If you have points it might still be needed. If you have electronic probably not needed .

They are still available.

Here is one

There's also one on the back of the gauge panel attached to the IVR.

A noise suppression condenser goes to the +ve terminal, not the -ve terminal.

If it IS connected to the -ve terminal, & the dist is points ign, it will cause erosion of the points surface.

Well, it WAS connected to the negative terminal, but it won't be connected to either in the future! I don't know who placed it there or when, but I don't need it now that I know what it is. Thanks for your info.

Make sure you have a condenser INSIDE the dist. It may have been removed & the external cond fitted as a stop-gap meassure.
