Aftermarket temp gauge with factory sender?

What are the odds of an aftermarket temp gauge working with my factory temp sender. I have a slant six so my temp sender port location is limited and the sender i got with the gauge is way to big. I really want to put my cluster in the car today but the new smaller sender wont get here until next week. Will it be close or am i SOL until it gets here.
 
If the aftermarket gauge operates on 80-10 sender/ohms range, it would work like the OEM gauge.

Lets just say I'd sooner put money on it not being compatible.
80-10 is the ohm rating for the fuel sender/gauge, but I don't know if it's the same for the temp gauge.
Actually any gauge and sender not purchased together is a crap shoot for accuracy.
 
Yeah i kinda figured but how would i measure the ohms on a temp sender. One lead on the probe and one on the post? And the gauge set has the proper gas gauge for the factory sender. They also came with the oil pressure sender and a GPS speedo.
 
Please explain what the "big deal" is here. It should not take you maybe 5 minutes to change senders, and I would not even drain the coolant!!!
 
Well i gotta try and get some money from the bank manager and shes being a real tight ***(trying to buy a house). Then i gotta wait for the damn thing to get here and im really impatient because i wanna play with my new toys.
 
yes all 3 senders are the same 80-10. Now what ohms generates what needle position is a little different. Like 34 ohms for example aint in the same position for the OEM oil, water, and fuel screens even though all 3 operate 80-10. That difference is in the needle pivot/motion. So a temp sender at stone cold can drop open or infinite resistance, 23 ohms is the center of the range, and 10 ohms is running hot, and you don't want to run the engine hot, feck alllll of that. Just look at the new aftermarket gauge paper work/specs. Surely some data somewhere states what ohm range it operates in.

I never knew they all worked within the same ohm range, thanks.

Yea you would think the documentation would say the range somewhere, but it really wouldn't surprise me if it didn't either.


Could either not hook it up and run it, or wait for the right sender.
Seems simple enough.:D

How many times has the same tester been referenced here? Every dealerships service dept had that same tester. It would test all 3 OEM gauges at their 3 equal positions. It took some fancy assed mechanical engineering within the gauges to get other ohms values to generate different needle positons while keeping 23 ohms in the middle of all 3 screens.

Factory sender and aftermarket sender in same cup of water for the same amount of time. Safe to say its not gonna work.

but whats the water temp? Like I said before a stone cold temp sender can go anywhere even full open.
 
Yeah i over read that i suppose room temp water i suppose i could boil some and test it after
 
or use a thermometer. Heat the water to 180 degrees and check for somewhere around 35 ohms +/- 5.
