Hey yall! I’m in the middle of a rebuild of my 318. I, not surprisingly, goofed up while rushing through it and forgot to install the mounting brackets for my alternator and steering pump. Since the bolts hold both the timing cover and water pump, should I go ahead and replace both?

Not sure what you're asking here- replace both what?
Timing cover and water pump? Both brackets? The bolts?
To install the brackets, just remove the required bolts and install the brackets; using a dab of seater on the threads since some of the bolts thread into the water jacket. Done.

Sorry! I meant would I have to replace both the water pump and timing cover gaskets if I were to remove the bolts required to mount the alt and pump?

Replace both what? Bolts? I wouldn't think so.
Sorry for the terrible wording I meant would I have to replace the gaskets for both the timing cover and water pump if I were to remove the bolts for the brackets?
I was under the assumption that once you torqued down those bolts, loosening them would ‘break the seal’ if that makes sense

No. As long as you only remove the necessary bolts and not all of them all at once.

Word of caution...

without the bracketry some of the bolts on the passenger side MIGHT be too long and hit the cylinder wall. look on the ends after you remove each bolt for signs that they made contact. If they did they COULD have cracked the cylinder wall.

(I know its not what you would want to hear but it that happened NOW is the time to know it.)

No. Just sealer on the bolts

Dang :/ I’ll make sure to check this. Thanks for the heads up

Yes on the different bolt lengths, did not think that you had removed the timing cover. The shortest bolt in the timing cover to engine block, lower driver's side, 1st or 2nd bolt is really the one to look out for.

Was reading up on another thread about this. Would the circled bolt be the bolt of concern? I know for sure I didn’t use a fastener longer than an inch, but I’ll still be sure to check for any damage, especially since I didn’t install it with any brackets. :/

there are several posts on FABO that have a diagram of the bolts, water jacket, and lengths

Yes, that one or the one above it, sorry, I just don't remember! At my age, they call it CRSS. Can't Remember S... Syndrome.

found it...

KEEP IN MIND THIS IS CAST IRON PUMP SPECIFIC
