Another 273 question, which head where?

Is there a left and right cylinder head? they both look the same. There is a number one casted on one of the heads but does not line up with the #1 cylinder, which I assume is the most forward cylinder. On the other cylinder head there is a 4 cast on it. Am i missing something else or does it matter.

There is NO right or left for cylinder heads.

Rebuilt my 273 this winter. The head on drivers side is marked 1, the head on passanger side is marked 2. If you rebuild your motor, place all the parts that they were, this to avoid problems and unnecessary wear.

I would think if you look close enough at the threads you could tell which head had the alternator bolted to it. That is if you need to put them back where they were.
Water ports in the ends may provide a clue too since the front ones have seen a lot of wash. The water just stands in the rear ports ( no flow ).
