Found this site today with a google search and am glad it exists. I am a previous owner and builder of multiple A-body cars. Currently my excitement for these cars has returned through my son with a '73 Duster that has become our project. We built a 360, estimated 400hp, which was added to the car with 727 and 8 3/4. Currently this is an open differential and we just purchased a Sure Grip that is about to be installed. Extracting axles and pulling the 3rd member is not a problem. I just have never disassembled and/or set anything is the differential unit myself up to this point. First the first time, I am nervous.
A previous article stated that " [FONT="]If all you are doing is putting in a sure grip on an open rear that is in good condition then you'll only need to set back lash and carrier bearing pre load which is not too hard on an 8 3/4". I am not sure what carrier bearing pre load is, how to set it, nor its value.
Another article metioned "Set the back lash to the original value to prevent potential whine". This is can handle. The dial indicator is ready to go.
I imagine this will not be a big deal, but I would like to be prepared.
Has anyone seen any manuals, especially on-line articles, that steps through rebuilding of the third member?
Option 2: Anybody want to offer a step by step guide if an article is not availiable?
