Any Ham Radio Guys Here?

-
Concrats Joe, Now your hooked and it's just money from now on......Keep studing for that General lic.You will find it's even more fun working the world then the guy 20m away and make some friends you will talk to for life. Have fun. '73 Bruce

Thanks Bruce! It really was a kick and getting the great audio report was like getting a great time slip at the drag strip or good numbers on the dyno. ;) He was a really nice guy and very tolerant of my fumbling around with proper procedure. I almost slipped into CB talk, AAAACCCCKKK! I caught myself and apoligzed right away and got an instant "hi hi", lol.

I have to say that having a clock on the transciever is helpful to remember my 10 min station ID.

Thanks again for all your help and am looking forward to building that 6m beam for some dx. I plan on making up a wire dipole for inside the peak of my garage roof. I'll let you know how that turns out.

I hear ya Joe!

Not really... lol

I might one day.

LOL! Ya gotta get your license Marland, it really is a kick! :toothy8:

Congrats on getting your feet wet. Now, you're in for a lifetime of fun, heartache, expense, broken antennas, chopped up feedlines, stacks of unfinished projects, and late night or early morning DXing. You're addicted and there is no cure.

"audio report?" Good on ya.

Sorry about that, still learning protocol. :error: QSA

Totally addicted. Monitoring 146.520 right now...

Thanks for all your help 67Dart!

No buddy, that was meant as a COMPLIMENT.

My pet peeve around here is the 'ol.....

Do ya gotta good copy onme?

(answer) "Ya ah gotta goodcopyonya

"signal report", "what's my report", "how do you read", "how do you hear this station", these are all good ways to extract a report from the other station.

There seems to be a huge debate nowadays on the use of yes or no, the use of "Q" signals on voice communications. My opinion is that "if it helps" and "don't overuse" then use them some

Around here there is a TERRIBLE bunch of poor habits. Several people are always going around, "QSL this" or "QSL THAT" when a simple OK, or simply JUST CARRY ON THE CONVERSATION would be better. Same deal with the use / overuse of things like "Roger."

You don't "NEED" to immediately transform into "radio operator speak" to sound intelligent on the amateur bands.

We call 'em "whackers"

I think I read somewhere that plain english is preferred but I'm still learning the Q codes in case I need to understand what is being asked of me. IIRC correctly I asked "Can I get an audio report? I've heard some bad things regarding the ICOM-7000 microphones and I'd like to make sure all is OK." Acceptable 67Dart?

That car is insane. :pukerigh:

Good to see all the hams here. Here's a pic of the mobile setup in my 4x4...

front.jpg

Dual band Icom 2800 to the right of the steering wheel, and an Icom 706 in front of the shifter. Kenwood communications speakers are to the left of the glove compartment.

At the house I have an Icom 746. Unfortunately I've never put an HF antenna up in the 6 years I've been at our "new" house. In fact I barely get on these days, when I do it's on 2m simplex.

73!

I run the Icom 706 also in my Neon with the High Sierra screw driver ant-works well. We have worked the Ukraine on ten using FM on our drives to FLA and back. And some over the road truckers on 40 (Eastcars).

It's great to see some more Hams chip in! I'm so new I'm more a piglet than a ham, lol.

Made more contacts last night and was invited to join in on a 2m net. It was my first foray into 2m SSB and I will say that RIT is my friend, lol. These guys at Rocky Mountian VHF were all seriuos as hell and they were all running beams on towers and were taking check ins as far north as Casper, WY as far south as Albuqerque and as far east as central Kansas! Even though my polarazation was wrong, I was getting great signal reports for about a 50+ mile radius and they were very welcoming. I even got a S9 from a guy in Ft. Lupton!

I'm hooked!

Did you get the IC-7000 Joe? I assume that must have been a SSB net on 2 since you said your antenna was the wrong polarization? That wasn't a SWOT (Side Winders on Two) net was it? We have a SWOT net from central MO that I check into sometimes. If I remember right they have SWOT net's in several locations.

Yes got the Icom 7000. It's a heck of a radio but most everything is menu driven. There is a learning curve and the first time I tried tuning in SSB I found out I was using the PBT funtion, lol.

You got it Fishy, it was SSB. First time I ever worked it too, pretty fun. :) Here's the website for the club: http://www.rmvhf.org/

Glad to hear you are out of the chute. I have a 706 MKII, and I guess the 7000 series is the next upgrade from there. There ARE limits to those little radios, but they sure are a LOT of stuff in a little bitty box.

Good deal! Most any new radio is menu driven and take some getting used to. My Kenwood TS-2000 has a ton of menu's. They do a lot more than the older rigs, if you can only remember how to do it, LOL

I'll listen for the Rocky mountain 2 meter SSB net each week and see if I can hear them. I have 500 watts and a fair antenna and have worked several states on 2 SSB but CO is a long way off so it'll take good conditions. But we are getting into that time of the year when the VHF freq's light up.

Cool Fishy! Let me know if you hear these guys when they're pointed east. They start at 8pm MST every Monday and start by pointing north so east comes around 8:20 or so depending on how many logins they get. I can't tell you how cool that would be if I hear the net controller announce a log in from IL!

I'll be going to a hamfest this Saturday morning and expect to meet a few friends I've made this week on the radio. What a fun hobby this is!

They are pretty cool. I wish the band scope had better resolution but the radio has a video out jack so I'm going to give that a try too.

I just got updated on this thread ramcharger, and I must say it sounds like you are enjoying and learning more and more each day \\:D/
Congratulations on a new hobby.
Sounds like allot to soak in, my brain need's a transducer  If that makes sense

I just hope my brain doesn't overload and short to ground, Mike.

I just got a 4 element 2 meter beam from a friend and a rotator from radio shack. A couple friends are coming over on Saturday to help put this sucker up! I'm really looking forward to seeing how this performs over the vertical. Both the vertical and the beam will be mounted on the same support with an antenna switch so i can call CQ on the vert then dial the responder in. It'll be cool on the VHF+ net on Mondays too!

I'll post a pic when it's done.

Sounds like things are progressing good Joe.:thumrigh:

I was just thinking yesterday how your new found hobby has been coming along. lol

Sounds like things are progressing good Joe.:thumrigh:

Just like I was warned earlier, it is an expensive hobby, lol! I went to the local candy store (Ham Radio Outlet) this afternoon since I hit a a bit of free time and had the opportunity to meet yet another broadcast engineer by trade and before I knew it, I had spent 2 hours BS'ng ham radio sitting in the nice comfy chairs that HRO provides in front of a giant rack of equipment all set up and ready to go..... :axe:

I hate that place and love that place all in one shot. :p

Anyhoo.... I spent a few bucks on a new 2m mobile and some extraneous equipment needed for my beam upgrade. :eye: Ouch.

Honestly, it's just amazing how many ham guys are car, motorcycle and gun guys all wrapped up in one package. I think it's an independence thing. :thumrigh:

Thanks Marlan and Tracy for checking in and yes... this hobby has me by the pocket of my jeans. I'm done spending for quite some time as I now have just about all I need including a bunch of great books from Fishy, a 1:1 balun and some pre cut wire from another new cool ham bud plus an old B&W VS300A antenna tuner I have to learn to use. :read2:

Joe your lucky you have HRO near you. The nearest store of that caliber is about a 5 hr. drive (each way) for me and I've never made it there. We had one on a small scale in St.Louis that had 2-3 radios on display but all the ham op's retired so they discontinued selling ham equip. Sure is nice when you have a nice display of stuff you can twist knobs on and see what you like best.

I'll take a pic next time I show up. They even had a 1.5KW Alpha linear amp there to play with.... AAAACCCKKK! lol! Only 8 grand out the door..... Not a big store but packed with stuff. I'm lucky I got out the door with credit intact. :eye:
