is there any way to tell the date of an 8 3/4 rear? local has 2 with sure grips (supposedly) was wanting to know if any way to tell if they are the spring type or the clutch type with out dis-assembly ,thanks Lawrence

Not sure but there are 2 types depending on year. The way to tell those apart is the location of the vent bolt that holds the line on. I dont recall which was newer though.

No way really to tell if it is clutch or cone type w/o pulling it out of the housing. if they are untouched 741 742 most likely clutch, 489 70/30 chance it is cone. I reality they can be interchanged to be either no matter what case.....

if they are already separated here is a visual reference for you.

Well, the 70 and later housing has the vent tube down on the drivers side axle tube, whereas the pre-70 style will be up on the hump of the center section somewhat!! This won't tell you what Suregrip unit is inside, it could be either! However, the 489 case was introduced in 69, and with it came the Auburn cone style SG, so a general rule of thumb is that if its a 489, it SHOULD have the cone style SG! Of course it could've been changed, and nowadays it's a much more common occurance than it was in the past!! Hope this helps some!! Geof
