I am considering building a set of short headers. 80% to see if I can, and 20% to improve performance, I have had a cracked steel exhaust manifold from the jeep 6 staring me in the face for the last year suggesting that it can be done and I might have fun in the process.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this topic are welcome.

you will not have fun.

so now that's out of the way.... what's your level of fab skill? what tools do you have at your disposal? what's your gag point threshold?

I would like to know how it would turn out for you. I had thought about it myself, for my slant build. I have a set of headers now, that won't fit my 65 Barracuda. Nice headers, looks to have never been run. got them from another member, who thought they would work, they won't clear my bell housing and clutch linkage. I even thought about modifying them, but it would be a bummer to cut perfectly good headers.

Torches, welder, and curiosity/sense of adventure. Ive made some body panels, I have done enough body work to not want to do any more! Never made headers, so there is the interest, and none are made for my truck, so why not?

What is a gag point? When do I give up?

yeah, the gag point threshold is where you want to light everything on fire.

well, you've got some background and skill so that's a plus.

it's a lot like body work only the tedious part is in the construction and not the finish. lots of abstract thinking and fitting, refitting, making and remaking bits.

if you can find a pair that are kinda sorta close and you can slice and dice or at least a set of flanges to start from you'll be miles ahead.

When you start pukin your guts up in frustration.

Thanks for the laugh! Lets see if I can remember that when I am hating life and wondering why I thought headers was such a good idea...

The Jeep header/ steel exhaust manifold is what got me thinking that a header would be fun to modify/build...

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic.

You can do it if you put your mind to it. I have learned to do a lot of things from the mindset that others can do it, so there is no reason I can't.

I want to see the finished product on here in a few months.

That is a great and true philosophy.

I have already decided from the responses so far, that success builds upon success.

A pair of very simple header like exhaust manifolds might be the best recipe for building a little experience.

If successful, and slightly experienced I may be willing to try something a bit more useful than steel exhaust manifolds...

If you're going to do it, I'd think a slant would be the best case scenario with all of the room you'd have available. Not exactly a header per-se and not a slant, but I did make up a set of custom tubular logs for my BB early A-body. I did it mainly to train myself for when I attempt a set of proper long tubes when I build the stroked big block for it. Here are some progress photos, for what it's worth. I say go for it and good luck! Your imagination is your only limitation.

I made headers for my GTO. Bought ready made 30,45,60,90* bends...all in stainless steel. Used a stick welder. I had a spare block & trans to use as a template, made things a bit easier. Been on 20 yrs now.

I made some headers back in the 1960's. Can be frustrating. Trying to build a set of "equal" length headers and clear everthing on the car can be a nightmare. Tri-Y or shorties are not near as bad. "Tubular" exhaust manifolds would be the easiest (like in post 10).

I think this is a great exercise and think about doing this a LOT for my sons valiant. Yes i know you can buy them from big names but the expense justifies the desire to do things myself sometimes. Not the most efficient way to get things done but it can be very rewarding and I always learn something from the experience. My suggestion would be to start with mild steel tube, and make all your initial mistakes on that. Fix it, learn more, then when you're happy, do it again in mild steel, then do it in stainless. :) That's what I think I'd do anyway.

If you do this, a thread chronicling the process would be really cool.

the late great Tom Hoover (not the vacume guy) once said..."everyone should have to build one set of headers, but no one should have to build more than one.

pictured is a set for GEN III / Whippled Hemi in a custom chassid (L) and Stage I Hemi in a 67-76 chassis with HDK (R)

They have plastic angled Rings now that you can pattern them out and then that's your mold to make the headers with they make it simple now it's not as aggravating as it used to be the products on the market now easy peasy

The prices are starting to go down ice engine works has them for $499....126 PC. kit

That's better but stull out of range for one offs in my opinion. That said I have two 3d printers I can knock them out in with some patience. nowhere near as good but for a couple of uses they'd be good enough.

I've built a couple in my day !

Probably not what your looking for !

$500 for the "kit", $300 for tubing, and flange., plus welding supplies. I think I will spend $600-$700 for "store bought" headers.
Now if you have a need to build a couple different headers, or the is nothing available to buy, that is a different story.

As sound as that logic is, when you have all the things and way too much "gumption" it's a hard challenge to pass on. lol. I've learned the hard way that sometimes it pays to spend.

What truck? Hi or lo mount starter? I know that Clifford shortys will work.

Low mount, but the 225 is taking the place of a 230 flathead on an M37. The initial attempt is going to be a glorified tubular exhaust manifold. Based upon this conversation that is unfolding, I am keeping it simple.. IF I am happy with the results, I might try again and get more complex in design. Long tubes would be nice, but not yet, and only if I have fun the first time!

Buy a set of headers that are supposed to fit. None ever do. Use that as your starting point, cut tubes, move things so they fit your car. You'll be way ahead with time and frustration levels.
