Spent the last couple of mornings inspecting, sanding, and priming the damaged driver's side inner wheel well and battery tray due to acid in the area through the last 4-plus decades. Why don't all cars have the batteries sitting on those acid absorbing mats?

It would be a waste for me, many cars over many years, never had a leaker. Over charging is a good reason for them to spew acid.

Something UNDER the battery will really do no good if the acid is cascading off the TOP

charging and discharging a battery causes the boiling and moisture on the outside. So batteries of yesterday with many well vented caps combined with a weak charging system that drained and recharged the battery almost constantly would cause a mess. Those needed water added semi annually or more. You probably have more rust under that corner of the hood too.
Todays stuff is different and better in many ways. A maintenance free battery has such a small vent that of it does boil that much it will swell its sides. Proper charging system is the most important factor.
