Are 2.45 gears bad?

I think you will have to get a new carrier...Go ahead and get the sure grip....BTW I have one for $125.00 + shipping...

He's right on the carrier. My first 8 1/4 that I played with had the 2.45's and I went just to 2.76's and had to change carriers to do that.

Gas mileage for sure.

As far as I know, all post '70 (and most likely earlier, but I have no personal experience with them) half-ton dodge trucks had the corporate 9 1/4. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

You could get an 8 3/4 until '74 and from there it was an 8 1/4 standard or 9 1/4 if the truck was ordered with the HD rear end. I had a '75 SWB D100 that was an ex-forest service truck so it had the 9 1/4. Last year I had an '81 SNB D150 with and 8 1/4.

I sheared a pinion gear shaft in two at the outer bearing on a Dana 70 in a '75 Ford F350 with a 390 once so anything can happen to any rearend.

I always thought the problem with the 8.25, at least in drag racing applications, was the axle tubes twisting.

That is a very common problem on the Ford 8.8 but I have not heard of that being a problem on the 8 1/4.

That is why you weld up the tubes, and weld 3/4 angle iron along the tubes.

Obviously, if you are running BIG power, this will NOT be enough it.

I am getting around the 27 spline issue by using a late model (29 spline) carrier. Of course, this is requiring me to use custom (Moser) axles.

Oops...posted after you...LOL

I have 2.45s for now, and I will say they are GREAT for the open highway, but the car is a bit of a dog until you get up to 2500 RPMs.

Chuck,

Could you get a post '70 1/2 ton Dodge pickup w/4WD and an 8 1/4? All my experience has been with 4WD Dodges, sorry I didn't mention this previously.

Is this not the same rear put in R/T Durango's, 5.9 Dakota's, and half ton trucks??? How many have you ever seen give out??? Just my $0.02....

Not in the R/T's, my 01 R/T had the 9 1/4 corp. axle in it.

I had a '78 Ramcharger 4x4 with an 8 1/4 rear and that thing had a 440 in it stock, figure that one out, doesn't make much sense to me. I suppose it could have been swapped out at on time but why. I think it was the original.

Chuck,
You are correct!
I did a little research on this and found that some Dodge 1/2 ton trucks did indeed come with a 8 1/4 rear end. Although relatively rare, it did happen. :blackeye: Thanks for the info!

I have an 8 1/4 rear in my car... has 2.76's and swapped to a 3.23 over 5 years ago...
since that point i have had slicks on it at the track, 3800 stall converter, and 12 second passes, about 5000 miles per year on the rear, and ZERO problems...

the limited slip models are stronger then the open ended ones... you can pull the ring and pinion out of a dakota, before 92 IIRC when they went to 29 spline axles...

they came in 3.91;s and 3.55's....

your problem is the housing,,, its 2.45 specific... but its up to you , 8 1/4's are cheaper most places then the 8.75..... just my 2cents

DJVCUDA you mean carrier and not housing don't you? because I have taken out a set of 2.45's and installed 3.21's in the same housing but had to change the carrier.
