After replacing the axle shaft seal, I'm not sure I set the axle shaft end play correctly on my 69 Dart 8 3/4 rear end.

I lightly tapped the adjuster clockwise with a brass punch and a small hammer until it wouldn't turn any more. I set up my dial indicator the only way I could get it to mount, as shown in the picture. This appeared to be zero end play.

I backed off the adjuster 3 notches, which yielded .012 end play (the spec is 8 to 18 thousanths). I got this reading by pulling the axle out, letting it go and zeroing out the dial indicator. Then I pushed the axle in, let it go and took the reading. In both instances I let the axle return to a point of equilibrium.

But if I push the axle in hard and hold it, then pull it out hard and hold it, instead of letting it go, I get a reading of over .030.

Does anybody know if the end play is supposed to be measured with the axle at rest after being pushed in and out without applying continuous force in and out?

Thank you for any advice.
