Has anyone tried to use the b&m
Flexplate 10236 with a 904 trans?
B&m lists this application for the 360
727 combo and lists a different plate
For the 904. I am going from a 318
904 to 360-904 and already have the
Flexplate from a different project. It
Does mate with a 10 inch converter.:banghead:

As long as the bolt pattern on your converter matches one of the flexplate patterns, you're OK.

Magnum isn't the same balance as LA if that's a variable.

No, she is a la engine. I was reading in
The archives of people having
Problems with their starters not
Engaging all the way because it was
Hitting the flexplate on the b&m plates
So that is my next concern.

A 10230 plate works on 318 and 340's with 904 & 727. Not sure why this one would be any different.

I plan on running the same plate on my 360/904 combo.

Is the 10230 plate totally round?
The 10236 plate is round with a
Big bite taken off one side so you
Can run a neutral balanced converter
So it basically makes up for the
External balance for the 360 on the
Plate instead of on the converter

Diameter of the plate should be the same.

My comment was to point out that other plates work on both transmissions behind SB. Nothing about the balance difference.

That's what was really puzzling me
Was why it wouldn't work for both
But b&m lists it for only 727 and a
Different part number for the 904
The original 318-904 and 360-727
Are the exact same plate. I did call
B&m and the person I talked to there
Said they thought it should work but
I'm not too sure how knowledgeable
The person was, no dedicated tech line

Over the years I've come across a couple of Mopar mini-starters that required clearancing for the bigger plate. But there was also an issue where I had to clearance the starter body and part of the block externally. Could have been isolated, possibly vendor casting related issues.

The stock 318/904 plate I have is different then the stock 360/727 plate I have. The 318/904 is a 10 3/4" converter and the 360/727 had an 11 3/4". So the stock plates are sized accordingly. The b&m plate I bought is only drilled for the smaller diameter converters, maybe the one you have is bigger and double drilled for large or small converters.

Mine is drilled for a 10 inch converter
Or a 11 1/8 converter I would be
Using the 10 for the 904.

Use the B&M 10239 for your 360/904
Neutral balanced converter (no weights).
Use the appropriate 360 harmonic balancer, and your good to go.
Mini starter works fine with this flexplate.

So there is the difference, the 10239 is listed for the 904 because it is only drilled for the small converter, the one you have, 10236, is listed for the 727 because it works with both large and small converters and like I said my stock 360/727 had a large converter. I don't know why they wouldn't say the 10236 works with the 904 in the description, and for some reason the more universal 10236 is actually a few less $$. Maybe there is a starter issue sometimes, you can always mock it up on transmission before bolting it to the motor and even put the starter in and see if it clears everything.

Just to be on the safe side I ordered
The 10239 flexplate I mounted the 10236
On the converter just to see what it
Looked like, very minimal clearance for the
Starter gear, maybe not enough, will
Post measurments when I get it. Thanks to all !!!!!

I wish I had my flexplate numbers handy, but I know I had to grind about 1/4 inch off the ends to clear my mini starter. The flexplate had holes for 10 and 11 inch converters. Which is great if you have a 727. I don't think the 904 usually has an 11 inch converter so the universal type flexplate just barley nicks the starter. I was able to trim the plate with the starter loose and an air grinder. I had the tin inspection shield off.

Again I wish I had the numbers handy.

Wise choice...:thumrigh:

Whats the condition of your trans ?
The added hp/torque of a 360 will eat up an old 904 in no time.
If you havent done so,now is the time for a rebuild with quality bands and clutches.

Trans was working great behind the
318. That engine was rated I believe
at 230 hp the 360 I built I guessing
will be about 300 hp. Purple shaft
cam 280-474 lift, x heads, 9 to 1
compression.

So was mine...I suggest rebuilding it while its out. It will be just a matter of time with the 360.

Thanks for posting, looking forward to your results...

Good luck with the project!

Ok to answer my own question, just
Received the b&m 10239 plate for
The 904 it is about an inch smaller
In diameter which amounts to a half
Inch more clearance all the way around
Which is needed for starter clearance.

does anyone know the stall specs with using the felxplate and stock 318 converter behind the 360?

I just put a 904 behind my 360 and it a vibration so i read this form and bought the 10239 b&m flexplate and now I'm having bad vibrations and a clunking noise and am at a big loss if i cant get it figured out
