I'm not anywhere near the point yet, but was thinking. My 65 formula S didn't come with back up lights. Seems that would be simple to add. How would I add these.

The back up lights on your '65 Cuda are the round part of the tail light housing below the red lens.

You shouldn't need to add anything.

Rick, the wiring harness doesn't have a plug for the back up light receptacle. I do have another harness that does have one and I could change that,

My 65 Barracuda did not have backup lights either, but I just ran a wire back to them and got sockets from the junkyard, and put a toggle switch under the dash.
You could wire it to the transmission so that every time it goes into the reverse your lights go on. I did that on another car but this way is easier.

MY 65 valiant doesn't have them , but there is a plug on both sides pigtailed out of the harness I think they would plug in there if that option was checked off when it was ordered, but the switch to turn them on ???

Backup lights to me if not ordered I would leave them out. Are you planning on driving the car where you need them? If not I would just leave it cool the way Ma built it. These cars are each unique to the order unlike todays cars.

I'm just going to say something here as I do Not use them for backup lights... I use them to give me a two bulb tail light on each side... But... I use a RED led bulb and it shows though on that clear white ish lens as "Very RED".... And it makes the 64-65 tail light very distinctive at night... Peeps who have seen it Love it...

I don't need no stinkin back up lights !!!!

Note: All my bulbs are LED in factory sockets ... Except headlights and stock oem radio light⚓

I will try to find a picture of the style my 66' had because as you age you need more lights to see and back up and not hit anything. I know some people drive their cars fwd into a garage at night but I grew up the son of a CT State trooper and was reminded it is a state law you cannot back out of a driveway so reverse lights are amust.

The ones listed are the style I HAD under the rear bumper on the 66' used a simple hole in the spring box and tied into the reverse lamp wire. Easy peezy. and they look period correct.

Nope... People do and they never get pinched but it is a state law in a lot of states.
Safety reasons, That and you cant run over a kid you cant see.
Connecticut has A LOT of rules- only used when it suits a particular org or group.

State law is one of the reasons, just like seat belts and out side mirrors.

State law is one of the reasons, just like seat belts and out side mirrors.
Tell me about it:
When I went to register my 66' Barracuda back in like 1989 they made me install seat belts even though the car did not have them to begin with. The DMV inspector told me it was a shame because even he know it was an option in 66'. The holes were all plugged with a monkey puddie like soft body filler.

The best one was when I went to register my first Demon back in like 1990 and I was 19 but looked really young; the DMV inspector broke my stones about the "factory hood scoop" and the color of the high beam indicator. It was factory... I never touched it.
I don't remember, but I think it was red and he told me it "had to be blue." He also did not let me register it because there were two 1/4" drilled holed in the frame rail where the electric fuel pump was. He said it was "rot holes."
I came home and told my Dad.... He grabbed his coat and said, "let's go." We drove back to DMV and it was open late that night and he rode with me thru the inspection line. When the inspector started breaking my chops again because the hood scoop was still there and made me follow his finger along the hood line to show me how much vision I lost over the scoop, my dad gets out of the passenger seat and the inspector yells at him to get back in the car... He pulls back his flannel to reveal his State police badge.
The inspector just about crapped himself. It was awesome. I immediately got my ticket punched "passed" and he personally walked me inside to get my plates.
I was so lucky to have him pulling for me then and now. Love my parents.

While posting this not to argue any point, I found no law on backing out of a driveway, only cautions when doing so such as you cannot back into crosswalks and intersections, common sense should prevail in all movement of a motor vehicle and interpretation of any law for that matter as often the case, words that further define the law are being read over.... the stupidity of not legal to back into a street is only surpassed by the stopping forward direction along a street to reverse into a driveway.

bigadams- Albeit I understand and I am not trying to start a "back up race to be right" but backing out of a driveway from my up bringing and my Father has been a no-no. Even to this day if I pull into their drive way my dad gives me that look. So I called him last night and he said he is retired now but as of last time he knew, it was illegal because you are backing blindly into a travel lane. Also, something about backing over a sidewalk (if the sidewalk goes across the bottom of the driveway apron) was an additional fine "if you are caught". It's Connecticut where I live- the more rules to create more fees state, so I cannot speak for any other state or even Connecticut for that matter, I am just a citizen. Also, pulling fwd then backing into a driveway is much safer as there are less drivers and vehicles are involved and the travel lane you are pulling out of the drivers behind you see back up lights and brake lights and know what you are doing vs.backing out. Remember every driveway is different. My old house had to large trees right at the end with a wall of bushes so backing out was impossible to see until you were 1/2 way out on the road... now its my Ex-wifes issue.

So I went on line and in the current Driver's education manual the state (of Connecticut) uses this is what I found on page 14 or 15 -
"Never back a vehicle in any travel lane, it is illegal and unsafe to do so, except to parallel park or to perform a three-point or K turn. Drivers do not expect a vehicle to be backing towards them and may not realize it until it is too late". - State of Connecticut 2016 Driver's manual

And I understand about common sense and just thankful I have it. I back out of driveways and do other things according to the law I should not. The law is the law whether we agree with it or not. We have a hands free law in Connecticut except for police and fire personnel. They are the worst offenders of driving while using their phones. Who's going to stop them?

My apologies to Tadams for running this post in the wrong direction. It was not my intention to derail the post about back up lights. Sorry Tadams.

Yep, even if it isn't equipped. Stupid laws. The highway patrolman I was talking to told me about the safety of the vehicles and how important these items were. He probably doesn't know. Doubt he was even born in 65. I'll certainly do some research before I take it for any inspection

Hey Tommy....you don't have to get it inspected here in NC if it's 35 years old or older. I'd still want back up lights, but no inspection required.

there are some mustang back up lights that are very similar to the back up lights on 67 and 69 cars, on ebay. thinking about them myself.
