So I'm watching the most recent BJ auction and although the economy is keeping me from selling a car right now, it is hilarious to hear the auction house and the announcers avoid the topic- not ever mentioning the economy. Every other car is 'undervalued,' a 'bargain,' or a 'steal at this price!' And of course they stop the bidding regularly to recap the features and the 'one of one' bs, (one of whatever model made with a big block, a 4 speed, blue, with an 8-track, and a broken glovebox door). They are stating it is a $140k car easily; and it sells for $80k.
Maybe I am a little bitter, but the people who pretend to advance the auto hobby by trading cars like stocks, and set the prices too high for the people who actually enjoy driving them, are back on the loosing end for a while, and hopefully it will allow us to buy some of our cars back!

October 2008, not last year yet, lol.

Just a couple years ago people were paying stupid prices for muscle cars at BJ. They must be basing their prices on what cars sold for in 2006. If that is the case then 80k today for a 140k car 2 years ago is probably about right. With the economy like it is,BJ should feel fortunate to get their cut of anything selling today.

Are they new?
My understanding is these are the latest BJ auctions now playing on Speed, from the Oct 2008 Vegas auction. I have not seen these before.
The next BJ auction will be Jan 09.

Just like houses in California. They were stupid priced a few years ago and overvalued by a factor of 3, but now are a great value even though half the insane prices... they're still overpriced by 25-50%.

I love the folks that base current values or great pricing on past inflated prices.

Sorry! My bad. thanks for the info!

Those idiots have done more harm to the hobby than even the government. Now every putz with a 318 Duster sitting in the weeds rusted up to the door handles with a tree growing through the trunk thinks he has a gold mine. All because of a bunch of idiots with more money than brains out to one-up the next guy just so another awesomely fun to drive car can end up sitting their living room with all of it's fluids drained out.

they are from feburary of 2008. will be intreasting to see how 2009 proces at BJ are,,, just keep in mind,,the cars you see up for auction,on TV,, are all hand picked to go across the block,, there are 5000 registered rich, guy bidders that have nothing to do with there money except bragg and get on TV,, and only 1100 cars to go across the block,,,none of the rich guys wanna go home empty handed, and tell there friends they didnt have enough money,,

there are more cars for sale out side in tents,,that are much cheaper and some just as nice if your considering a show/driver,,not a museum piece

I concur with Fastfish, that show was Feb 08. If you look on the bj catalog for Jan 09 there are quite alot of reasonable cars in there. Watch the Wednesday and Thursday shows they have nice priced cars on the block then. Remember cheap prices don't bring in viewers, Fri and Sat are the big buck nights. I like to watch the Mecum and RM auctions because they are more realistic and they have reserves, the Dec 08 Mecum had alot of no sellers......

Kinda neat though to see us go through another economy down turn since the last one in the late 80's early 90's..... same senario different people... keep your car in 10 more years it will be worth twice as much....

I was watching Mecum on HD Theater the other day and car after car was rolled off the block without reaching the reserve. Real nice hemi cars not even getting to the $75k range. Some where along the line people are going to have to realize muscle cars aren't going to fetch what they did even a year ago.

The one on last night was from October of this year in Las Vegas not the one in Scottsdale nearly a year ago. I was there in Vegas at the auction and I also watched it last night. The one in Vegas is a small venue so they have a turntable at the end of the stage on both ends to get the cars in and out, you may have noticed that, Scottsdale doesn't have them. :-D

I too find it amusing when the big oaf Craig Jackson can be heard harping on "way under the money", no such thing, it is what it is. The housing market and the stock market are in the crapper too, you can call them way under the money too but in reality it's worth what you can get for it. Most of these cars aren't way under the money, they were way OVER the money before and have pulled back :-D

If it wasn't for guys selling and trading cars like they were stocks the guys like you and me sitting on our butts watching it on TV wouldn't be able to ask as much for our cars as we do now. Even the price of A-bodies has gone up in the last few years because of the guy that says "well I saw a restored one go for 4 times what I'm askin on BJ" even if it was a hemi or a 1 of 1 car and he is trying to sell a 318 car.
It's not just the BJ auctions it's the age of our cars that makes the price/value go up and the fact that not everyone can afford that B or E body they have always wanted so the next best thing is an A-body because they are cheaper, more guys interested in A-bodies makes a demand and we all know what happens when something is in demand. One good thing about demand is that the aftermarket will kick in to high gear and make more things for A-bodies and pretty soon F-bodies (so Ross will be a happy camper :D ).

The auction house is in business to make money and they don't want to remind people that times are hard they want to remind them what a great Fing car this is and why you need to bid more money than the next guy on it. They aren't going to stop the auction and say something like "Hey, what the hell are you bidding on a car for? You should be spending your money on something more worth while that will help the struggling economy, not spending it on an old car even if it is the only one that came from the factory with a sunroof, yellow exterior, blue interior and a naked lady mudflap."
Even with the crappy economy guys are still buying and building cars. I get calls all the time to go do prebuy inspections on cars or appraisals on cars that guys just finished so they can get insurance on them. If you really want to sell your car you have to advertise it in more than one place. Try Hemmings , autotrader, ebay, craigslist, collector car trader, and racingjunk all at the same time. Someone may see it, fall in love with it and buy it.

I am not sure if it was jan '07 or '08, I want to say 7, anyhow, a man I knew because of business bought a 1971-2 Challenger that was seriously Hot Rodded and he paid 510K for it. I saw the car last year driving down the road and it is beautiful. I also saw him buy it at BJ on the Speed channel. He is building a 76,000 sq. foot house on 125 acres with 35 on the lake. We are in Florida and I will live about 3 miles from his place. I am working as fast as I can to make my baby purty and maybe he'll want it. I will let him have it cheap, 350K, should do it. Folks such as he don't care about money they just want one bigger than yours and they weren't born with one.

I've been watching the BJs on Speed for the past couple of years. I think the high water mark was set a couple of years ago when a Hemi Cuda went for $2 million. There were not as many MoPars last January in Scottsdale or last October in Vegas as there were in recent years. I believe that the MoPars were always on the high end of the bidding wars compared to Fords and Chebbies. Yes, I also agree that these auctions inflate the value of our cars across the board. There are a lot of people with a lot of money chasing after a few cars at those auctions. I much prefer building a car myself; I get more satisfaction out of it.

What really singes my sack is seeing the Bozo floor assistants coaxing and cajoling the bidders to up their bids. Blatant self-interest. BJ takes a cut from both the buyer and the seller...the more money, the more profit.

I get infinitely more satisfaction from watching shows like "Chop, Cut, Rebuild."

A Viewer Here Has One.will Never Sell It .darn.

the town of scotts dale also gets 8 % of the sale if you take delivery in person,,,but if you have it delivered the city gets nothing,,strange,,

January 13 is the 09 BJ auction. Love watching the CEO's of the finance companies that need bailed out spend their millions they got for running the companies broke. I just broke ground on my new 40 x 60 addition at the shop so i could have a place to put em. You can bet i'll have em deliver em so the city don't get any money. Now don't you guys and gals be bidin against me. You guys and gals have you a Happy New Year tonite. I'll watch a bowl game and sleep the New Year right on in.

You can be mad, you can be jealous, but the reality of the entire situation is very simple. When any item starts getting the attention of investor type people it always starts to increase it's value. The smaller guy does recieve some benefit. Until something has some increasing value potential, no-body wants to create parts for that item. Their was a time when every avenue I tried in locating parts for my car was a dead end, suddenly in the last couple years parts are available and at competative prices. cars that had that tree growing up through the floor boards were a heart beat away from the local scrapper. Now we all look a little differently at it's potential, don't we. So while I too can't aford that very highest end car I can feel better about investing in the one I can aford, And wether we like it or not we are all in the investment world , at some rung on the investment ladder. Rather than being jealous of the guy standing on the rung above me I always cheer them on hopeing to climb the ladder aswell. The current situation is a stabilizing period for many types of assets but should be better for all of us in the long run.

Good observasion Planenut. You can't go wrong with anything with the name "PLYMOUTH" on it. They don't make em no more. May be the same with "DODGE" soon. Hope not.

I have been watching BJ for the last two nights. The prices are a little depressed high bids yesterday were in the 80-100K. It is on now on Speed. I don't know what happens later?
