can main bearings be taken out without removing crank. I have the engine on a stand and was inspecting the bearings and considering changing the mains. Basically can I tap the lower bearing out without physically taking the crank out? Like taping the rear main seal out.

Technically, yeah.... But I wouldnt. You run a very good chance of screwing up the mating edges tapping it in. Take the time and pull the crank. It also means you can measure it properly.

If those mains have been in the saddles for long then they've developed a memory. Hence when you reinstall and torque them you may not get the crush required. My rule, you pull one for inspection you replace it regardless, and if you replace one main you replace all the mains.
