Can I use the bellhousing from a 1989 Dodge pickup with a v6 on a 1970 340 motor for a 833 overdrive conversion. The 833 has the larger 5.125 front bearing. Would I need any other parts from the 89 truck v6 for the swap, like the flywheel or clutch?

Make sure the bolt pattern is correct where the bell meets the trans.

IIRC most "later" trucks use a different pattern.

Might be a "435" transmission.

The bellhousing is in a u-pull it so I will check that out before I do anything.

The bellhousing bolt patterns are the same. It will bolt up. However, I am unfamiliar whether everything else is in the proper place, such as the clutch fork and the ball mount for the Z bar. I am sure you can make it work, as the bolt pattern is the same and that would be difficult to make work if it were different, but it's not.

The truck bellhousing's do work, the clutch fork pivot is different, as is the fork. I believe you'll have to use the A-body version of both, but I haven't done it to be sure.

.

Looks like its a hyd clutch on the 89 truck so im not going to get it.

Also, the 5.125 bearing retainer came in two versions, a small bolt circle version and a large bolt circle version.

If you have the small bolt circle version, you can machine it down to the 4.8x diameter and make it work that way.

...and there are indeed two different bell to trans bolt patterns in post mid-1980's Dodge trucks.

I'll see if I can find pics.

Here is the 435 style- the kind you DON"T want-

Brewer's Performance - Mopar A833 4-Speed Transmission and Component Specialists

Apparently it was pre-1980 as well.

Be careful buying sight unseen, as I have found this one is mostly what folks are selling and some don't know the difference. I had a guy bring one to Don Garlits swearing it was for an 833.

This one is the 833 style-

Brewer's Performance - Mopar A833 4-Speed Transmission and Component Specialists

I did inspect the 435 one closely, and the inner holes on the 833 do line up with one set of holes in the 435 bell, but the bell holes are threaded and you would have to bolt from the inside.

Could be done but not sure of any other issues and just seems easier to get the right part.
