It's been over ten years and rust had began to fall into the water from the inside of the metal lid (which is constantly saturated with moister/water droplets). I wired brushed most of the rust with an electric drill and this morning brushed on a thin coat of OSPHO (a phosphoric paint prep product). What should I use for the following/final coat? Thank you.

John Deere Equipment Enamel with 5 Star Hardener so it sets up hard.

Made for Farmers old rusty equipment, and it stick very well.

Of course the better you Prepare it the better it sticks.

Self Priming. First coat is primer, wait 24 hours, 2nd coat is the Top Coat.

Can use it without the hardener too like the farmers but don't put it in the Sun to dry or it will wrinkle on you. Won't wrinkle with hardener in it and drys 10 times faster with hardener.

The base is the old Alkyd Enamel.

The 5 Star Hardener you will have to buy online... ebay.

Can buy JD Black at the JD Dealers or also online and have it shipped in.

I use it all the time... New trailer raw steel construction also.

Cistern water is rainwater. A soft water reservoir.

Ive seen lots of cisterns used as "holding tanks" for drinking water. UV, chlorinator and a softener and you MAY be good to drink.

I agree, stainless may be best, but pricey.
I don't think I'd want any kind of chemicals on the water side of the lid. Can you make a new lid out of aluminum, or cast a concrete lid?

wash the dishes, shower,
There ya go, last thing you want is anything "foreign" on your dishes or body. Make it as clean as you can. We got sick regularly at camp the first few years before I realized that ALL of the water needed to go through the UV light and filters, not just the rainfresh tap at the sink!
