We will be taking our Coonhound, Blue to be put to sleep today. His kidneys have failed...

Here he is doing his best Stoner impression....Hate this.....but to keep him around would just be for us, and that is not fair to him. He has been picking at his food the last week or so, and stopped eating altogether yesterday. He gave us 11 great years of companionship....sure am going to miss him....How long before the heartache eases up....

As you know it is the kind and noble thing to do. Blue would not want his master to be in pain so try to not to be mournful for too long.

Awww.

Never easy.

We had to have a stray cat put down a few months ago.

Had been hanging around and finally let us get close.

Turned out to have feline leukemia and a bunch of other nasty stuff.

Only knew him for two weeks, but still sucked.

He did have at least one good day.

Nice lookin' dawg.

They KNOW you love them!

Doug, so sorry to hear this came so soon.
Stay strong, Blue will be in the "land of the slow squirrels" running free as he did as a young pup. You've both had nothing but love for each other for years now. And, as hard as this is to do, it's the final act of love you can show for him.
When does the heartache stop? It never fully does...

So sorry to hear this. I know how it feels. I just had to put my cat down that had been with me for almost 14 years. I was really close to him. He had a tumor on his liver. It was just 4 weeks ago and just reading this made me tear up.

My heart goes out to you,, I had to put my boy "Stimpy" down after 15 years.
Thought I would be strong,,,,I cried like a friggin' baby.. Got tears in my eyes now..

Why does doing the right thing hurt so much??
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sure am sorry, Doug. He won't be in any discomfort anymore.

So sorry, had to do that to my dog when I was a kid. I don't think it ever gets easier.
