So, Amy & myself are dining on some of the finest cusine availiable from our local Taco Shack that delievers when the lights start to flicker in the dinning room. I casually mention I'll change the bulb after dinner and that we should turn on another light so we're not eating in the dark. Then that light started to flicker, then there was an explosion and the house shook.
We live down the block from the Auburndale Long Island Railroad station and I look; nothing. I look to the left down my street: we had an explosion underground in a manhole. We have 12' flames coming up through the now open manhole. And my buddy's van is parked about 10' away. My buddy's van I borrowed because the alternator crapped out in my Dart when I visited him the other night. So now I tearing *** running down the block to MOVE his van before the real action starts (Police Dept, Fire Dept, Con Ed Gas company...) and as I'm approaching his van I'm asking myself " What the %$#@ are you DOING!" I pop the remote, dive in the van. and light `em up getting the hell away from the fire. I'm 2 blocks away and my heart is pounding. I go around the block, park it in a safe place, and get back to my Wife, who's now outside calling 911.
Long story short, they came and shut down my street, flooded the manhole, we finished dinner, and true jaded New Yorkers we are, we squeezed past all the emergency vehicles and proceeded to go out until 3:00 am . I have some crappy pictures and video I haven't been able to upload. No TV yet, but (obviously...) we have internet. It was fun....
The video was more dramatic.
