Brainstormin' 440 vs 5.9 ...

-
the 4.30 gears will cancel the 440s torque advantage
The recipe calls for a 29" tire.
and guys wonder why they're so slow, that 26" or 27" will do it with the wrong gear. lol
Didn't take me long to figure that out with a 4.57 gear and a 26" tire with my old 383. lol

Why? lol.
Get a steel shim in there, while you're in there measure, probably figure out to be 8.5: 1
It's going in as is... as an RV 440. A big, inefficient, heavy, hunk of iron that i get to wrestle with to see what's running around in there for ponies.. LOL

Post 2.... 29x9 slicks. I have 3.23's if that's what the 440 needs. More than once, I've witnessed cars going faster with less gears

What a great crowd here. 21 pages and over 500 responses and everyone staying on point with the thread. Makes it fun and meaningful, and some good info in here for others now and down the road that may search 440 and find this.

I missed that part, nice, you've been reading the recipe book.
just hunting for deals, man, scroung'n.. LOL. It's what was on the back of the truck when the 5.9 made its pass. On aluminum slots

So have I.
I keep forgetting we're talking about an under headed, under hydraulic cammed 440.
I'll try to do better. lol
Me too, personally twice.
I've had 4.56, 4.11 (or is it 4.10?) and 3.91s in my 62. It literally didn't care what gear was in it. (Final decision, 3.91s with a Detroit locker 8 3/4)
And my Tina with 14x32s was faster, and just as quick, when I replaced the 5.14s with 4.57s.

Likely from tuning mistakes. Cast pistons can take a beating, they just can’t take detonation.

I guess I shouldn't mention the 440's were pulled out of trucks/MH's and other assorted land yacht and smacked them with a 250 shot. Detonation is indeed the killer. They can take a beating. If they blew up, off to the yard for a fresh one and hope the good valvetrain wasn't hurt!

8:1 bone stock short block with a 557 solid, some got rollers, ported iron heads and
nitrous-botle.gif
.

They ran OK and made us a bunch of money.

I think you are going to be weezing for RPM/power about the 1000' mark with the 440 with that gearing. That is where that magnum 360 will be better off at the 5500 mark.

In high school I street raced a bunch with a guy named Dwayne that had a 4wd power wagon 150 with a junk 440 in it, with a 200 shot. That truck made him a bunch money as well.

adding studs to the pan rail makes things much easier, at least on the 4 corners.
Online says a guy can cut for the rear sump and it will work just like the Mr Gasket (which advertises that it services both).
Re-usable?

you just sold me. I was going to buy 2 fel pro pan gaskets at 18.00 each. This seems like a cost savings in just one removal from assembly. Also, online reviews are good. Thanks
are you using the paper gaskets along with the valley gasket and the torker intake, if not, you should.

Can't remember what I used. Just the valley gasket? Or did I use fel pro with it.... hmmm Don't know.. LOL
What paper gasket you use?
