Looking for some insight here. My brake pedal was not depressing the brake light switch.
While I was attempting to adjust the switch mounting bracket I was moving the pedal back and for to see if I could tell where the play was coming from. I heard something brake and now the brake pedal is about 1/2 in from the switch. There is obviously an issue but I’m not sure what it is.
I am thinking I will need to pull the brake booster to access the linkage. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to make a rough assumption that you pulled the brake rod out of the booster by pulling back too far. What happens when you just depress the pedal again. Does it feel like something "pops" into place?
Also, did you do a conversion from a manual brake system to power? I did that without changing the pedal rod from a manual to a power and now it's "too short" and I had to adjust my brake light switch to accommodate it

Thank you for the reply. That’s what I was thinking too. I don’t feel anything popping in or out of place. My brakes still function. I only tried them in my driveway. I’m thinking I’ll have to pull the booster off the mount and look.

From what I can tell I have a stock power front disc brake car.

I was going to adjust the brake light switch the nut is facing the drivers side and my heat/ac vents are in the way. I didn’t get there yet since I ran into an issue. How did you adjust your switch bracket?

Maybe post some photos of where you were adjusting.

Im assuming you are working on a 72 Duster?

The brake light mounting bracket has a bolt that goes into it from the passenger side of the brake mount.

IF you attempted to loosen a NUT from the drivers side not sure what you were adjusting

This is the pass side view. The slot is where the adjustment BOLT will be

As for OEM power brakes I don't think the rod can come out of the booster like Fords can. Or is your setup different than this

it was years ago. I don't remember exactly how I did it. I only remember being upside down and adjusting it what felt about 10 times to get it "just right". I also don't have A/C or heater vents down there (yet) so I definitely didn't need to deal with that.

Thank you. I get the adjustment for the switch.
Now I just have to sort out what happen with the pedal. And why is 1/2in or more from the switch.
The schematic you sent looks like my power brake set up.
And yes I’m working on my ‘72 Duster

When you pulled the pedal up, you pushed the brake light switch through the bracket and further away from the pedal. It's very easy to do. Just readjust the brake light switch.

any chance the head of the plunger broke off?

Can you confirm you have a stock brake light switch like above?

there are aftermarket switches that look like this.

Yeah I have the stock switch. Hopefully that’s what I did. It’s such a bad spot to get to. Im going to try to sort it tomorrow.

So I was looking at my brake booster and brake light switch today and I decided to purchase a new switch. The current one seems suspect like it’s getting hung up. My brake switch bracket is all the way forward and I do not have easy access to the nut because of the ac. I can’t even see it.

I also checked my brake booster and the rod into the back of the booster is where all the pedal play is coming from. I have limited pedal travel and my brakes and fluid are good. Is the rod into the back of the booster suppose to be physically attached to brake booster or just push against the metal surface to apply the brakes?

Here are some photos of my brake pedal switch. The bracket is as far forward as it can go.
The he pedal has so much pay in it there is a huge gap between the brake light switch and the pedal bracket.
Could this be caused by a bad brake booster? I don’t see any issues with the pedal linkage.

your switch is not supposed to be plunged in like that.

get a new switch and I bet your problems go away.

The pop you heard probably was the black / brass tube on the plunger getting shoved into the switch

You MIGHT be able to remove the old one and "repair" it but they are not too expensive to replace.

$8.00 plus 20.00 shipping from Classic, Ebay 20.00, you might even find the propper replacement at the parts store
