I have a 65 Barracuda with 9" drums. There is a primary and secondary shoe on the front brakes. Is the primary shoe the one with the shorter friction surface and does it go towards the front of the car?

Sure it does... but if you can't figure it out... "short shoe forward" !
I'm sure it does but I didn't find it however thanks for the info. That's the way I thought they went but wanted to make sure

Not so much. I was surprised too. In 67 FSM they show an orentation.

This is the only photo in the 65 FSM that has an orientation that I could find.

I used the pictures to figure it out but couldn't find anything showing orientation

The other tip off to direction is the star wheel adjuster; it goes to the rear.

on the Fords I have worked on in the past, the backing plates only had one adjuster hole so handing was much simpler.

This is from 67 FSM, (green) should have been in the 64 manual. But if it wasn't typed here, at least they showed the strut rod (blue)
