Hi guys. Its been a wile since I removed and replaced a cam. What I would like to know is do I need to lift up the Distributor drive grear to remove and replace it.working on a 318 this year.

In my repair manual it reads = by removing the radiator and grille, then sliding the camshaft out through the front of the vehicle. It does not say anything about removing the dist. Let a Tec jump in here and be sure.

If you have the new cam shaft to look at you might can judge whether the rear bearing will pass the cam drive gear or not. You surely realise to dist gear is gonna turn as the cam shaft moves forward. Do you think you can tooth match it perfectly and have it turn back the same amount. Nah LOL
Those manuals like to say remove this and that, refer to that section for info.
Keeps us flipping back and forth, folding page corners, screw drivers for book marks (wait ! not that ont , I'm using it ), greasy finger prints, all to save paper.
Kudos to you for having a manual though. Some think they can get complete instuctions from a forum.

You are right  I would easily pull the dist on the 318 and then put the new cam in with white grease then replace the gears and timing chain and do this with #1 at top dead center,.
Thank you RedFish :-D
