Hi to all! I'm building (hopefully)screamer 318 for my -65 A-body and I'm looking for some advice...
Parts list for now:
-71 318 block, bored .040, zero deck
KB 399 pistons
Heads 340 X home ported, with stainless 2.02"/1.60", 63cc chambers
Intake: RPM+1" open spacer
Carb: Quick Fuel 650Dp E85 modified
Hooker semi-fenderwells
Msd ignition

Backed up with 904, manualvalvebody, hughes 2500 stall converter.
8 1/4 with 3.21, tires 235/60/15(I'm on a tight budget for now, maybe later I'm thinking 3.90 or 4.11's and spring re-location for more rubber)

Calculated static compression should be round 11.1:1, that's why I'm thinking E85 as a fuel.

So what do the experts recommend for the cam?
If I stick with hydraulics and stock valvetrain? comp 275HL?
If I go mechanical? comp xs282?

Problem is with mechanical, that I need adjustable valvetrain. And they are not cheap. I'd have to go with Chinese pro-comp rockers, but the quality is a big :!:. 'Cos i live here in Finland those old 273 rockers aren't easy to find.

And roller cam is not an option for now (budget)

Help me, please 'cos I can't decide on the cam...

If you are on a budget, stay with the hydraulic grind. Valve train can get expensive quickly, especially with international shipping rates.

^Yeah, shipping is expensive. Not to forget Finnish sales tax 24% and import duty ca.3% that I have to pay for parts and shipping.

My headache with the hydraulics is to get right preload for lifters. My heads are heavely milled and block is zero decked, so I'd have to order custom pushrods...
And I'm planning to rev that litle engine 6,5K rpm...

Decisions decisions...aargh

It is in my opinion that you want to do this once due to expense. So, it is my advice to make a plan and stick to it even if it takes an extra two years of waiting.

I'd suggest an adjustable valve train (AKA-rocker arms) with a high lift camshaft.
With a gear ratio that numerically low, I really would not suggest a camshaft of more than 228@.050.

Shoot you know your gunna scream that 318 to 7500 RPM. You will be better off with a Solid Flat Tappet in my opinion then you won't need to worry about Lifter Pump up or down issues.

^:thumrigh:
So, mechanical flat tappet it is.

But, is comp xs282s too much? I know that 324cid displacement is not quite enough, but I have to live with it...

I'm not afraid of big cams, 'cos I'm looking for not to have cruiser car...more like an Weekend Warrior.
(My friend has 416 stroker SBM and I think it has a mild cam (PP284H), sounds nice but could pull harder...)

On the another hand, I don't want to over cam it, 'cos it's a small motor....

So what would be best(largest) alternative that I can use?

XE274S you do not have enough recomended stall for the 282

Take a look through the classifieds...there are about two or three sets of 273 adjustables in there right now...if they'll support the XE274S, they're available

Hmm... After a comparison of cams that xe274s seems like a good choice. It also have a IVO point at 63 degree, so it would lower dynamic compression to pump gas levels.
Kind of win win situation if I decide to change carb to regular fuel Dp(I have one in shelf allready)
Alltough there is also Lunati's 30200740 that has .050 235/243(comp is 236/242), but more lift .526/.546 vs. comp's .502/.511 but I can't find cam card for lunati to calculate dynamic...

Any advice?
