What years did they make cast cranks? I ask because I have a 1969 225 that has a cast crank, narrow bearing journal. I was under the presumption that all 60-75 cranks were forged and 76-84 were cast but I must be wrong.

The stamping on the top of the block is "1 225 T2 24 E". I had read somewhere that the E indicates a 1969, however that must not be the case.

Thanks Dan,

E can indicate a '69 engine if it is the first character in the stamping on a passenger car engine. In other positions, it indicates other things. For example, an E later in the stamping like this indicates a cast crankshaft.

225 is self-explanatory
T is either truck engine or Trenton engine plant (depending on who did the stamping, when)
2 24 means the engine was built on 24 February.
But we don't know what year, because the wild card here is that "1" at the start. How sure are you it's not a poorly-stamped or otherwise distorted something-other-than-1?

Keep in mind that engine stamping errors and foulups are very common.

What other numbers do you find elsewhere on the block? What numbers are cast into the manifold side of the block?

It seems very much like a "1" to me but not 100% sure. Unfortunately I totally assumed this block was a '69 due to the "E" and had all the forged bottom end items ready. Whoops lesson learned

Isnt there a casting date?? Asking cuz i do not know.

Dan, do you have any literature with all that decoding information?

Me too. I'm out of knowledge, then. As much as the passcar engine stampings differed from what the books said they were supposed to be in terms of format, the truck blocks seem to be even more diverse.

This a solid- or hydro-lifter motor?

How 'bout those casting numbers on the manifold side of the block?

In one place? No, for two reasons: I collected mine over three decades' time, and that's just info on what the stampings are supposed to be. The experience with the variation/deviation came from 30+ years of looking at many motors.

I have a guess as to this present case, but won't know if it's a good one or a crummy one til I learn about the casting numbers and/or solid/hydro lifters.
