think "factory production line"
If there were any threads or adjustment required it would have been left natural.
Lower control arms were dipped in cosmoline (a wax and kerosene compound)
most everything else some shade of black

At the factory. components that were installed in their natural bare metal state, were said to have been coated with Cosmoleen ( spelling!?) to help keep the surface rust off till they went out the door and sold. IF you trying to build a 1000 point show car and never drive it OR restore it to factory OEM and treat the bare metal parts to try to duplicate the look and but yet protect them from rust, and wear. There are some pants that duplicate the look of bare steel, or cast whatever. They will need a good primer too.
