Building a fresh 489.

Is this pattern acceptable?

If not the only way to go here is to shim the pinion closer to the ring as I first set it up with no shims under the setup bearing

That looks to me like the contact pattern is much to shallow on the ring gear. I would not run it like that.

So adding shims under the big bearing should move it toward the center..is that what I should try next?
 

if you have no shim to start your set up with a 489 case start with a 0.030 shim ,,, 741 case start with a 0.090 shim ,,, 742 case start with a 0.090 shim ,, in all cases check your pattern with the starter shim and if the pattern has to move make shim changes in 0.003 increments up or down in thickness to perfect your gear pattern. your final gear pattern should look like this
