One of the reasons folks move out this way is for the ability to do what we want. Stevens County, not the residents but the county itself, is one of the poorest in the state. We have no noise ordinances. No animal control. Have a problem with a neighbors dog, call the Sheriff....who will normally tell you to shoot the dog. County employees actually call it Stevens County a Third World Unincorporated County. I pay little attention to my neighbors...except for Tent Boy.
There is 4 adults and 4 kids living over "there". No utilities. No septic. No Porta Potty. Multiple neighbors have filed complaints with Tri County Health, they are the folks that deal with Septic Issues.
The neighbor between me and tent boy has made mention of calling CPS. Having 4 kids, living in either a school bus or a tent (with a wood burning stove for heat), no toilet, no water...well to him seems neglectful. Never mind unhealthy.
Here comes the kick in the head. He was told that if the kids are not getting smacked around that it is not abuse. When he pressed CPS about the neglect aspect...he was met with a lot of "well, folks can live the way they want" type of stuff. CPS could not care less that these kids are living in a tent with a wood burning stove for heat....building department here in Stevens County no longer allows a wood burning stove in a garage or shop for heat yet a tent is "safe"?. Speaking of the building department, there is a code here in Washington that a family can only live in a tent for up to a year while building a residence. These folks have been living in a tent for over 8 years.
Neighbors 10 year old son is visiting. Shawn, my neighbor, sent him over with a Go Pro...holy hell, what looks bad on from street looks...well....like a homeless camp. Kid said he felt like he was going to puke from smell. Grandma lives in her own bus as she likes to spend her time naked.
Shawn is besides himself how this kids are treated. And the dead end he ran into with CPS is really frustrating him. He asked me if I knew what they did to bathe. Pointed to the lake...I have tried to explain to him that he just needs to put a blinder up in regards to these folks. Problem is his 5 year old daughter is really close with the 5 year old girl that lives there...not a whole lot of kids out here so...
