Warning to those who are desperate enough, like me, to continue selling on ebay rather than calling the scrap man and junking parts: you'd be wise to add bobbie1943 to your blocked buyers list.

I don't sell for a living but to help fund my project and to stop from adding parts no longer produced to the scrap pile. I do my best to describe things honestly and price things reasonably compared to what they sell for. I sold him a complete 1969 Barracuda floor-shift manual steering column that really just needed cleaning and paint. Even the turn signal guts seemed to move/detent fine. He messaged me back and forth for a month wondering if it would fit his 1968 Valiant, if I would accept a return, etc. I was more than helpful answering all his stupid questions and eventually told him I would accept a return if it didn't fit his car but that he would be on the hook for both the shipping to him and the return shipping to me if he found it didn't fit his car since I could only guarantee it fits the 1969 Barracuda I personally took it from. He agreed and bought it, I packaged it like it was a ceramic vase, and shipped it the next day.

He received it and started messaging me for advice about cleaning it, which I told him I'd disassemble it and media blast it. Then he messaged me claiming it won't work because it's a power steering unit (it was definitely a manual steering unit) and wanted to know if I'd give him a partial refund. I told him that if it doesn't fit, return it on his dime as agreed and I'd refund him minus the $35 shipping to him. Then he messaged me that the shaft is badly bent and unusable. I asked him for photos of the damage, and he claimed he couldn't figure out how to upload them. He submitted a return request with ebay claiming the item was damaged upon arrival. Then he left me negative feedback, not saying anything about it being damaged, but that it was not a manual steering unit and that I was demanding he pay for shipping both ways. At this point, I was done and told him that much. I spoke to an ebay agent who had me report him as abusing the return system (like that will do any good) and told me to process the return and that ebay would comp me for the return shipping. I sent the buyer the shipping label, and for the next almost two weeks I watched the tracking go from his city to my city, then back to his city, then all the way across the opposite side of the country, then finally back to me. Once I received the package, I found that the moron put the return shipping label on one side of the box and left the original label on the other side, apparently confusing the hell out of the shipping process.

I opened the box, and what do you think I found? The POS started wire wheeling on the housing to remove the paint, so he thought the unit was in good enough condition to start working on it. Then he stole the steering-wheel nut, a couple small parts out of the turn signal guts, and one of the plastic bushings. Then he beat the living snot out of the bottom end of the steering shaft with a hammer or something, likely to justify his "item was damaged when arrived" story. I spoke with ebay again, and they had me submit photos of the wire wheeling "modification" and shaft damage and had me sign an attestation that the buyer purposefully modified and damaged the item. They denied his refund and compensated me for shipping both ways and for part of the item but not the full amount. They are going to remove his negative feedback as being dishonest. Great, so now I'm screwed out of both my time, the cost of packaging materials, and the value of a useable complete unit and will have to try and salvage what I can by selling the housing alone. I'm still working with ebay to get full compensation, so we'll see. I'll say that up until the partial refund part, ebay had treated me fairly in the deal.

I searched for bobbie1943 on here before posting hoping I could just private message him and found nothing, so I figured I'd warn others and vent. Since telling him what I really think about him through ebay's messaging would get me banned from ebay, if he reads this, he's the dumbest, most dishonest, conniving person I've come across in a while and is everything that is wrong with selling used parts online.

One of the reasons I won't do anything but "Friends and family" transactions through Paypal for large dollar items. Fear of getting jerked around.

Did you list here before ebay? I get it, but kinda like going to Mopar dealership complaining how shitty a Mustang is....:poke:
@4spdragtop, You should check someone's content before making negative assumptions about them. :poke:I always list here before ebay and at a cheaper price than I list on ebay because I want to support this community. I posted the steering column in September here. If the items sits on here without any action, I list on ebay not because I want to but because I need to get rid of this stuff just like I take it to swap meets. You're welcome to buy all the parts I list here so I don't have to sell elsewhere, though.

Yours is a poor analogy anyway since FABO isn't a dealership, nor is it a parts supplier, nor did I buy or sell a Ford part. The better analogy is that FABO is a pub where Mopar people gather. A Mopar owner (me) sells something to someone at a swap meet (ebay), gets screwed, and pulls up to the bar (FABO) and warns people at the bar not to do business with the person he met at the swap meet. I'd welcome and appreciate that warning versus criticizing the person for selling Mopar parts to a Mopar owner at a swap meet.

Plenty of people here sell on ebay as well as other forums and swap meets, so I wanted to pass along my experience as a warning about the person.

I didnt think it was "terribly negative", more sarcastic than anything, thus the stick poke. I like my analogy just fine, BUT lets turn this into a positive shall we?? At least it wasnt a FABO member that f'd ya. Thats been known to happen from time to time with no recourse. Glad to hear Ebay is helping you somewhat.

Hey, @4spdragtop, I appreciate the clarification; sorry for any overreaction. ebay pissed me off this morning by refusing to remove the guy's negative feedback saying it's a legit opinion even though their "investigation" sided with me and concluded the guy misused the return process and damaged the part. I don't sell enough volume to overcome the hit, so my 100% feedback is now about 93% for the next year. Oh well, enough of my griping.

No apology needed, but I apologize as well, my sarcasm is hereditary and can get annoying. Lots of examples here on FABO of that. Don't ask my wife...
Good luck with ebay, I can only imagine the pain trying to deal with dishonest buyer. Dealing with ebay "help" has to be almost as bad as a shitty buyer/seller.
Good luck with project!

I never sold much on EBay, like the OP, just some plenty good items to keep them from going to the scrap pile.
All it takes is dealing with just one idiot, to make me say "screw it". Same as selling on any site. Not worth the hassel and BS of dealing with crooks and/or idiots.
Yes trying to deal with EBay is like trying to fool with the heads that run FB Marketplace, all idiots!!

Part of me wishes there was no internet and no ebay and such. You know, back in the days of the bulletin boards and penny pinchers, backs of magazines and newspaper ads. Back then, we did mostly local and semi local deals. So if something went bad, you knew where they lived and could go take it outta their *** if need be, so people tended to be more honest about things. Too bad some take advantage of internet anonymity. Hopefully, you'll get your full refund, but it doesn't sound likely.

I like eBay for the most part. Since 2001 I've completed well over a thousand purchases, some coming all the way from Eastern Europe and I've only been ripped off maybe three times and always by my fellow Americans. Stuff turns up there that surprises the hell out of me. I once did a search for the searchlight that was mounted to the mantlet of the tank I used to crew thinking it was such a ridiculous item there was no way one would be listed. It turns out two were listed for sale. Sorry to hear about the trouble you had with that buyer. After reading your write up the guy sounds like he's kind of stupid, and stupid people often do stupid things without even realizing they're doing anything wrong.

I feel your pain. I’ve been on eBay for 25 years and used to sell it quite a bit, hassle wore me down and haven’t sold anything on eBay in over a year.

I used to sell a lot of stuff on EBay. For about 20 years, I had NO problems at all. Then I had a few problems with people wanting refunds for BS reasons. And EBay / PayPal take the buyer’s side every time. PLUS, now EBay sends a 1099 to you and the IRS if you sell mover $600. So if you see a decent steering column at a swap meet and pay $400 for it, clean it up and sell it on EBay for $600, you only made $200 but the IRS will want tax on $600. I am 75, retired, my house is paid off and I have no major expenses that can be written off. So I don’t itemize anymore. And if you don’t itemize, how are you going to claim only $200 on that part when the IRS wants tax on $600?

I believe the Big Beautiful Bill permanently repealed the Federal 1099-K issuance threshold of $600. As I understand, it is what it was previously, at $20,000 in sales and over 200 transactions. Your state, however, may think differently. I believe it is still $600 in Virginia where I live unfortunately.

eBay and Form 1099-K

I think Illinois is the same way. was advised IF you were to receive more than six hundred dollars cash, DO NOT deposit it in the bank because they are required to report it.

I went round and round with pp about a W2/1099. Never could get past the SMF AI witch. Then I think that I figured it out. As said above 2025 tax info is 20k or 200 transactions. Here in Illinois, the SMFRMD's changed it to 1k and 4 transactions. I fall below both.

I'm sitting here remembering the time I met a guy at the gas station that just happened to need a set of 273 rockers, and I just happened to have a set....
or the time I found a guy that had an A-body 4-Speed by pure and total chance, and it had aluminum cases, 18 splines, and he only wanted $200.

Oh the days before the internet sucked the fun outta everything.

But I can watch arrest videos on Youtube, so there's that.
