So I have been an uncle for about four months now and this is kind have been my first experience with really little kids. I do know that that all children should be in a car seat until a certain height/weight and the size of the child influences what type of seat until they get to that point. Well my brother does have their car seat installed in their family car and it would seem impolite and a lot of work to remove that seat from their car to put into one of my older cars to give my nephew a ride. So I got the idea of getting my own child car seat that I could transfer between all of the family's special interest vehicles (all vehicles have lap belts, and none of the new age hook up points). Does anyone have a recommendation on what type of car seat that I should get? I would prefer to get one that would be able to grow with the child so I wouldnt have to continually get a new seat every year or something.

How old and how heavy is the kiddo? Most of the seats are design to support the body based on developmental growth. Most stay rear facing until a certain weight/height then move to front facing in a full seat then a booster. Problem is once they are in a booster they need a shoulder belt from the car too.

I let my daughter ride in the back of my old Mopars when she was about 5 with a booster and a lap belt. You should look up a car seat designed for just a lap belt. Most are for shoulder belts and anchor points.

Pretty much just look at the Graco website and pick one. They’re kind of the standard seat. Always comply with state law because some cops would actually give you child endangerment charges and you technically could get added to “the list”. It’s happened.

as of right now he is only 4 months old. And yes my brother lives in PA.

Okay so It appears I will have to find a seat that is okay with lap belt only. any other suggestions?

Most police stations or fire stations are open to you dropping in to ask about child seats. I'm sure the rules are different for each local but here they kid must be in a certified seat, facing backwards. Seat cannot be older than 10 years

I don't recall the brand but we got a car seat that locked into a base.

The base stayed in the car and the car seat comes out and snapped into a stroller.
The base relied on a lap belt only

You can buy additional bases.

It was by far the best car seat we ever had.

Probably Graco. There are several manufactures, I went through several over 10 years. As stated they do expire and I would certainly not buy used.

Hard part is they have to be rear facing until almost 2. Tight in an A body but can be done, much better in a 64 Bbody. Put lots of cardboard under it if you want your seat cover intact.

It was a stretch for the lap belt but I got my 5 yo's booster seat in the back of the barracuda. Felt kind of illegal not having a shoulder belt, but it was on a not super busy road so I felt ok doing it. We also have a rear facing seat for the other one, lap belt should work just fine for the diono since it only needs one going under the seat, the big issues is just the placement of buckle. I think it's right underneath the seat so it would be completely inaccessible.
