Would the chrome mopar ignition box thats rated thru 8000 rpm be too much to run on a 360 magnum in a 1991 dodge power ram 150 truck that has a borg warner select ignition coil borg warner select 7mm spark plug wires and the newer mopar performance vaccume advance distributer with adjustable mechanical advance. I'm trying to figure out what the best box would be for the best possible spark. Right now io am currently running an ignition module thats made by standard motor products and it is chrome as well. Just wondering if the chrome mopar box would be too much for a truck that dont see high rpm all the time but does occasionally. Or should i just stick with this standard ignition module?

it wont fry anyhting running at lower rpm's alot? because i do alot of off road climbing driving in 4 low and such just wanted to make sure it wouldnt kill my coil.

these boxes are rated up to the specific rpm. if you have an 8000rpm box and wind it up to 8500 rpm, it will more than likely cut out on you or burn the box up...

would i be better off to get aftermarket coil like a crane cams fireball canister coil or an accell super stock or msd blaster or a taylor or jacobs coil to compensate for the more powerfull ignition module?

I have a 20 dollar borg warner select coil right now and i used to think borg warner was good stuff but i have fried 2 borg warner select voltage regulators, i put an older wells voltage regulator on my truck thats old enough to say made in usa on the voltage regulator and that solved my charging issue. The borg warner selsect voltage regulators are junk in my opinion and that makes me not have alot of faith in there coils as well. I'm just afraid if i put a mopar chrome ignition module thats good thru 8000rpm it would be too much for th borg warner coil and fry it. But then again the borg warner coils may be very good and handle it just fine i just know the borg warner select voltage regulators are not that good.

i have a chrome mp box and use a mallory canister coil with it. i have 8.5mm taylor wires but that is it.everything else is factory parts.. of course a hotter spark never hurts...

I have a mopar gold ignition module and i know it says can not run on any engine that see's rpm lower then 3000 rpm.

Cool well i'll just look into getting a better canister coil and then get the chrome box too and a better set of wires 8mm or 8.5mm getting better wires has been on my to do list for quite awhile.

What about the ignition modules that don makes at fbo? Been told these are pretty good....

It's about equal with the Chrome box though Don himself will tout the better qualities of it. I ran Don's box for the last 8 years. I found no difference between it and the MoPar chrome box. Upgrade the coil if you can to take advantage of it. If the wires are in good shape, do not sweet it. Upgrade when there shot out.

So i can get the mopar chrome box and what coil woulb be the best for it? I dont like msd and accell stuff. I see crane cams makes a fire ball canister coil, how would it do with the chrome box? Or would i be better off buying dons coil to use with the chrome box?

A GM HEI module would give more spark. Either a 4-pin with the Mopar Magnum E-core coil (mounts on front bracket) or get the GM 8-pin module and their external coil that goes with it. Even easier is a $45 "ready to run" distributor off ebay and an E-core coil.

pjc, any coil made for electronic breakerless distributors will do. Prestolite purchased up Accel, Mallory and Jacbos a long time ago. ( http://prestoliteperformance.com/Home.aspx )
IDK who does MSD or Crane's items.
MPP' stuff has been Accel's stuff for decades.

The reason i was asking about what ignition coil to run with the chrome mopar box is because i read an article on moparts.com about a guy who posted coil and module combo's and was showing what rpm they drop off at and how many volts and ect ect it was pretty cool. I'm trying to find it right now so i can show you guys. But according to what i read getting a coil to match your ignition module is very critical. I have a replacement coil that i got from oreill auto parts its made by borg warner and is a borg warner select ignition coil and my ignition module i think is a standad motor products module. I got my ignition module from car quest and it was in a very old box you could tell they didnt sell to many of them ignition modules and its a 4 pin module and says st on it. And i have read standard used to supply car quest with there ignition parts and this module was in such an old box it said made in usa right on it.
So my ignition module should be descent but i am still leaning twords getting the chrome mopar box and the ignition coil that don sells at fbo because according to him the mopar chrome box and his coil do real good together.

I have thought about the hei route but i cant bring myself to put gm parts on a dodge i just cant do it. I think with my new mopar distributer on the way from don at fbo (4secondsflat)
wich will be phased and curved to my application along with dons ignition module and coil that does not require a ballast resistor that my igniton would run every bit as good as a gm hei ignition if not better. I have asked don alot of questions about ignition and his system gets rid of the ballast reistor but he also told m the mopar chrome box with his coil and a ballast still does real good. But with his module i could ditch the ballast reistor.
I have friends that are gm guys and i have seen them have problems with hei ignition most common being the modules frying. My buddy has a pretty hot 355 small block chevy and his engine wont even rev over 5000 rpm and he is blaming it on the hie ignition system.
I'm not saying that the hei is not a good system, just saying my buddy has had more issues with his hei ignition then i have had with my system. I just needed a new distributer becaause the one i had was about 8 years old and the bushings were starting to get worn out. I'm going to have this old distributer re-built with new bushings that way i'll have a spare mopar distributer. The mopar distributer i have now is the newer on with the mallory guts in it and so is the one i just ordered that don is phasing and curving for me.
