Any good ideas on how to clean out a gas tank that the fuel has gone bad in? What can be done after siphoning out the bad gas? Can it be done on the car or does the tank need to be removed?

Thanks!

I would determine how much gas is left in the tank, does your gas gauge work, Gas weight is about 6 lbs. per gallon. How much weight can you bench press? A siphon hoes may work to most of the gas out, not all. I would drop the tank after you get some of the gas out. Remove the sender unit and take a look see into the tank, this will give somewhat of idea of how much cleaning you may have to contend with.

You will have to remove the tank to do anything effective, such as draining the last dregs and rinsing it out. Once it's out, the sender unit hole should give you a good look inside. You can aim a lamp through the filler pipe hole to illuminate it. If it's not too rusty, flushing with a hose and letting it dry in the sun might suffice. There are treatments available for sealing the inside, if you think it warrants it. Some people insert a long length of heavy chain (keeping one end safely outside) and shake it vigorously to remove scale. This probably requires some muscle (I have done it with a smaller tank).

The tank should be removed. I've used a number of things through the years. A small length of chain, pea gravel. Put it in the tank and you and a friend shake it around like you're havin a fit for a few minutes. Rinse and repeat.

I concur. It should be removed. If its in good shape you can do the clean out with something you put in (I recommend a bag of marbles. CLR, and water, then shift it back and forth for a while) and then decide if you need to seal it.

If you seal it, I have used the seal kit from Eastwood and it worked really well. I got the nasty acid required from a local pool place, be ready to dispose of it properly, its really bad.

You decide if its worth saving.

If it looks pretty bad inside replacing them is not that expensive. If its removed to clean and inspect you are half way there.

Jegs has one for $109.
