I'm getting ready to finish a restoration on a 69 Swinger 340 and would like thoughts on clutches. I've got a Mcleod borg & beck (actually a long arm - pic below) pressure plate with a carbon & organic street / strip disc (260521). I'm putting this behind a 418 build. Here's my question - should I continue with this clutch or move to an RST twin disc? Benefits and cons from your experiences please.

The clutch you have should work nicely. One important thing I've found out the hard way with clutches is break them in properly, and make sure your linkage is squared up (I've always had to massage my rods and Z-Bar arms to fit flush at the mating surfaces) and adjust it properly.

I've always heard those twin discs are instant lock up. Not what you'd want. That's just what I've heard........

I think what you have is gonna be great.

That’s the clutch you want. Don’t bother with anything else. You should call McLeod and find out which cover that is, as they came with different spring loads.

Those plates come with a heat treated cover. Brewers has the correct bolts for that cover. If you use regular bolts it will fracture that cover.

If you ever get the engine balanced do not let the guy doing the balancing weld on the cover. It’s a quick and dirty way to correct the balance but it will absolutely cause the cover to fracture.

Thanks guys. Just making sure my original plan is a good choice.

I did talk with Mcleod a couple of years ago and my recollection was 2700 lb clamp pressure. You can also add weights if needed.

Are these the bolts you're referring to?

Yes, those bolts. 2700 is about as high as I would go. Unless you are unloading the clutch at high rpm with big power you probably won’t need counter weight.

I have that same cover but mine is adjustable. I’d need to look in my notebook but IIRC my lowest spring load is 600ish pounds and I think I top out a bit over 1k.

On the street Im at 1k and IIRC 10 grams per lever. At the track I go down to 600 and keep the lever weight at 10 grams and tune from there.

But I’m using a different disc than you.

I could be wrong on that pressure. I've got 9 1" diameter springs with 3/16 coil diameters.

I used to have a catalog with the spring pressures but I haven’t seen it in years. It could be 2700 but it’s probably 2400 which is perfect for that disc.

You can call Brewers and talk to Dan. He will know for sure. Or hit him up on here. He’s a member.
