I just bought a repo top console kit of three parts for my slowly saving another 69 4 speed F.B. Cuda Formula S . Noticed my O.E. used rear trash/junk box door has a push button to open it. On the underside there is a mount for it but this repo part that is fine in every other way except it does not come with a hole or mount if you wanted to carefully drill a hole out for it. Small details i missed looking at parts catalog's from a few good companies. I am sure to not be the first to notice but my question is how was it delt with or just ignored and remove the catch for the lock inside of the box and now maybe or maybe not it will pop open when hitting a bump in the road? Removing the light tension spring to hold it open with two hands would be irritating while fishing for something in the box like a lighter or your registration for the bear at the window.

They sell a repo top with the push button, your best bet would be to get one of those. I believe that’s the ‘70 up version.

The version of the door without the push button has a different spring set up, they actually tension the lid closed and not open. The down side is that door has to be held open, it doesn’t stay open on its own.

My console lid on my '69 has a bracket screwed to the rear with a hump that engages with the console body to hold it open.

Got a picture?

The pre-‘70 version I added to my ‘74 Duster doesn’t do that, but, the push button style one I have in my ‘71 Dart GT is the only one I have that came to me complete in a car so I may definitely be missing something.

Here is a picture of the spring to hold the door open on my 69. It over centers and easily stays up.

Mines like grjammer posted above. Its a bracket that screws to the console lid and has a nub that engages with console body to hold it open.

Hmm. Well, I definitely have the lever on the console lid, but it looks like my console base is missing the part where it’s supposed to catch. Looks like maybe a chunk is broken out?

Have you tried loosening the three screws and moving arm back? The holes in bracket are slotted for adjustment. There is a metal plate with a nub inside the console body for the arm to catch onto but the arm may need adjustment to engage.

I haven’t, I didn’t know until this thread it was supposed to catch a tab and be able to stay open. So thanks for that!

I’ll have to take a better look at it, but on mine I’m not sure there’s actually anything in there for it to catch on this particular base. Like I said, I bought it online and not complete so anything is possible

If you look at my picture and one you posted they both look to have a metal plate bonded to the inside of console body. In my picture plate is rust colored. That plate has a nub on it which that tab on arm clicks into. And arm is slotted to move front to back to adjust that engagement.

Well I'll be darned.

My console does have the little nub on the metal plate. The slotted adjustment was maxed out already, but the lever arm was tweaked so it wasn't putting enough pressure on the plate to stay in place. I tweaked the arm a little bit with a pair of pliers, now the console door stays up. Amazing.

Thank you sir!

Awesome! Much nicer when you open it, hear a click, and it stays open till you push it shut.

the piano hinge on the lid springs the opposite way. The lid with no latch button is sprung CLOSED. The lid with the button is sprung OPEN and the button latch holds it closed. When I did my Dart maybe 3 years ago the one with the button were not repopped at that point. You can reverse how your piano hinge is sprung. It took some figuring out but I made a simple change in where the "tail" of the actual spring is and the 'inside' of the hinge becomes 'outside 'of the hinge ... damned if I remember the details at this point (it was 3 years ago... I can't remember why I came into the room I just entered!).
