Why 'Exponential Growth' Is So Scary For The COVID-19 Coronavirus

Why 'Exponential Growth' Is So Scary For The COVID-19 Coronavirus

Think about these two sequences of numbers, one of which shows linear growth and one of which shows exponential growth.
  • 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, etc.
  • 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, etc.
In both cases, the numbers start out small and remain small (but growing) for a time. But very quickly, the differences between the top sequence (which is the linear growth we typically think of) and the bottom sequence (which is the exponential growth we're encountering now) become apparent. Exponential growth is so powerful not because it's necessarily fast, but because it's relentless.

Boy, everyone right now really needs to avoid contact with other human beings so we can get these infection rates turned around.

If this gets way out of hand and turns into a run-a-way, we all could be like a herd of Buffalo being run over the cliffs . . .

The above video stops at March 19; today is March 24. In those 5 days, the total deaths in the world has continued to climb by 13-14 % each day, and has continued at that steady exponential rate.

2009 swine flu killed just under 12,000 in the USA in about 9 months. Corona has killed right at 700 in the USA in about 1 month. The US death rate has been climbing right around 15% per day for most of the last week.

This is blowing up on to a steeper exponential curve much more quickly than swine flu.
