..was reading Larry Sheppards' mopar performance book last night and in the section on crankshafts it says all '72 and '73 manual transmission 340's received forged crankshafts.
.. correct?

he's probably right, there may have been a few leftovers used in '73 but that would be extremely rare.

looking at the harmonic balancer on a car is a quick way to check what kind of crank it's attached to.

..tx mplover...how do the dampers differ?
..forged narrower or is a part # req'd

there was a memo published by Chrysler stating as on April xx, 1972, 340 engines would have cast crank..and it outlined the new damper and converter requirements...

Note: In ’72, the cast crankshaft replaced the forged crank in production on April 11,1972 with 340 engine #HM340R-3911-8000. Damper stamped ‘Use with 340 cast crank only’

Maybe Larry did not get that memo....

..well that is exactly why i asked...was hoping for some '72,'73 manual trans.
owner input?
anybody?
