Never used a case spreader. Able to install them with a dead blow. Seen a few F'd up cases from spreader madness.

Prefer shims between carrier and bearing than loose

LOL, I knew that AFTER READING THE SERVICE MANUAL while contemplating changing gears in the 440-6RR back in the 70's. That axle had never had more than rear wheel bearings changed in it's whole life, I just decided "it was too much work."

If I'd had more money (in the Navy) I actually contemplated building a complete separate axle, maybe a 8 3/4 so I could swap them.
