Detent

Forgive my ignorance, but I see a few posts about detent, exactly what is "detent"?

An example might be the individual positions of an automatic shifter.
As you move the lever to each position it kind of stops in each place. The "place" it comes to rest is a detent.

Kidding! He's right...or a wiper switch or radio nob stopping at each setting before you move to the next...
